Hey guys, took my new sled out today... and i think i may have blown the motor. about and hour into the trip it started bellowing out white oil smelling smoke, at this point in time i headed back towards my truck. it stalled out 1.5 km from my truck. (thanks to kevin for giving me a tow back to my truck).

the sled had only done a 20km since its top end rebuild by the previous owner. your can see that its leaking a shite load of oil from the seal between the top and bottom ends. it won't start and the pull cord will not even recoil. do you think its blown or a gasket problem causing no compression?!?!!?

help!

by the looks of it a head gasket. it is a easy fix but get a compresion tester, and pull the exhaust off to check the pistons. and if your recoil is not going back in it has nothing to do with the motor probably your recoil spring broke.

sounds like the recoil crapped out

check to see if the bolts are tight between the cylinders and case

did buddy use new gaskets when he did the top end?

check you plugs

dont think its a head gasket. looks like its coming from the bottom so it could be the base gasket. do you mean you cant pull out the rope, as in the motor will not turn over? or just when you pull the rope it will not go back in? cuz if it's the first, probably need new pistons rings etc.

the rope will not recoil back into the sled. its currently extended wrapped around my handle bars.

i have no idea if the previous owner used a new head gaskit.... and he has moved to australia which makes asking a little hard...

sounds like it got thrown back togeather during the rebuild! white smoke head gaskit...oil around cylinders could be comming from anywhere..and you'r recoil is probally broken spring or it came apart in there. Good Luck!

What year is the sled? Worst case you're looking at a complete motor rebuilt. $3500.

Best case $1000 for top end and maybe the bottom end survives, if not worst case again.

Really depends on what the sled is worth to you.

well i am sure that one cylinder is gone! look. rebuild? or new motor?

its a 2001 ski doo summit 800, i only paid $2200.

First thought is i have 3 options....

1. rebuild the whole motor (3000 - 4000$)
2. Buy new motor and install (suggestions on price?)
3. Sell the entire sled for $1500 and but something else?

open to suggestions....

well the quiestion is how much of that shrapnel got in the cases and if your cylinder is still cood, gunna need re plating a possibly welding and thats about 250-400 $ depending on how bad, top end is about 600-700$ depending on brand. and looks like you need a new head, so your engine needs some work and its gunna cost a fair amount

oh and you still need to find out why your engine went, dont want to be getting a new top end then it going again for the same reason, yours looks like a lean burn down but could be wrong
