Call me a cynic, but asking me to believe the NDP or the higher ups WCB have in their minds only workers safety , cough (bull$hit)cough.
Its partly about power and control, very much union mentality, but mostly money.
40000 farms and ranches in Alberta, $850 t0 $1450 annually with even only 1 employee, = between $4,000,000 and $6,000,000 per year.

The babysitting and handholding everyone mentality that so many want to embrace is really crippling us in almost every aspect of our lives.
Smart people realize that its impossible to legislate things like;
-morality
-common sense
-compassion
-work ethic
-family commitment
-productivity
-personal pride
-tolerance for risk liability
-and a bunch of others.

Union rhetoric and assumptions that we all should be as stupid and lazy as the lowest common denominator, and therefore be all treated and paid the same is sad and quite pathetic IMO.

Hit the nail on the head. I dont think it is even about money. Its about control. Its a group of nimrods with no clue saying I know how you should live your life better than you do.

Oh ya and the lawyers(Notley) and her colleagues smiling now. This BS was implemented in the oil industry many moons ago. The patch was full of under 18 workers till they got control of that. We now know where it sits.

This is primarily designed to end the family farm as we know it today. Simply put there is not the time , energy, resources, cash flow ,man power, education, knowledge available on most family farms for this to succeed. The goal of the NDP is to replace these farms with large(corporate) farms. Then install a union work force...they believe this to be the answer to every problem on earth.
This is what will happen , farm land( we have lots ) will drop in price as the only ones competing for it are corporations, not your neighbours...we will see food costs triple , with much imported food From suspect nations in terms of food safety ! Once the corporate farms own the majority , food will become the new energy industry .... Food will be like it is for gasoline now ...pay the price or don't buy any. Can people not see the long term effects of this ...WOW.

Our family farms are well run safe tremendous hard working contributors to our way of life... This legislation will be the beginning of the end of this era ... Of small farms! I was raised on a family farm, have farmed and understand it. I see a lot of older farmers just selling out because they can not compete... Compare it to the Walmart/ ma & ps store. This is where this is going... And this will speed up the process .

It is hilarious ( not really) , how people said Harper pushed things through.... Now your seeing how a REAL socialist / communist government implements changes....!!!

Once again thanks NDP voters...are you happy now ????

Yes it's hard to say what this is all about.Maybe after this weeks climate talks is over (another scam) and the implementation of wind generation as a answer to coal, the destitute farmers will lease their land out at cheap rates for the wind turbines. I can see it all in ten years time.

I agree with all except for the safe part. I've been around ag trucks and equipment much of my life and for most it's more about get it done now than getting it done safely. Partly because safety costs money. And the weather waits on no man.

I come from a family of farmers and cow punchers. I know how it is. Sometimes $hit just has to get done.

The fact that the stats show this to be an accurate opinion though being the mortality rate is 3:1 over the oil industry in the past 9 years or so kind of make it seem logical for a city person who sits in an office to think that what the ag people need is wcb and oh&s. That's what they do. And I think they are wrong.

What needs to happen is exactly what some have already said. Education for one, get out and talk to the farmers and ranchers and see what it's all about and do an educated experienced assessment.

Then approach the issue with appropriate funding and grants to help farmers improve their safety equipment. Give them time to adjust and align themselves with a safety culture. You can't ram that down someone's throat and say this is how its gonna be now cuz I say. It took decades to do it in o&g. Ag will be no different.

Not to be an azz but you just described every small business owners struggles. Supply and demand ultimately dictates commodity pricing, and I get that farmers may be more subject to the influence of weather and climate but there is also government assistance available to the agriculture industry which other industries do not enjoy. I don't claim to know a lick about farming but I do know that lots of you guys do nothing to dispel the Woh-is me stereotype that farmers have in the non-farming community. I can't make a go of it because there is not enough rain, there is too much rain, we didn't get enough snow, the snow melted too fast and did not absorb properly.

I get that there are many challenges faced by the farming community, I also get that there are many of the same challenges faced by any small business. I get that farmers work 20 hour days in season but many also spend their winters loading up their new diesel tucks with their new enclosed trailer and 4 new sleds to spend weeks at a time playing in the mountains (and good for them by the way, that is not a dig) while other small business owners work 20 hour days year round struggling to pay for their Toyota corolla.

Bill 6 is SUPOSED to be about protecting farm hands just as all other employees in Alberta are protected. In the Employer/Employee relationship the Employer often holds the cards, "I don't care if you don't want to do that, or are nervous, I'm signing your pay cheque so do it" In a perfect world OHS legislation would not be required because people would just inherently do the right thing but business (any business including farming) is about the bottom line so employers are often willing to cut corners to save a buck.......

For the record being called a "safety guy" isn't a dig, I'm proud of what I do and I've helped my employers build successful businesses despite "all the fawking bullchit safety rules" if a family farm can not be successfully operated whilst keeping people safe then maybe the model is broken..... or the operator is unwilling to evolve.

Signed you friendly neighborhood safety guy.

Farmers are not a Mom and Pop store. We carry about the largest overhead out of most businesses with roughly a 12 month turn around. You would sweat a little if you had $1000000 bucks out in the field waiting for mother nature too. In most cases crop insurance is a joke so we take the risk. Most of us are about one year of failure away from shutting the doors. When the dust settles we hope to make a wage fitting of most out there.

The other problem is we pay this huge overhead out at the cost of what ever we are told the price will be. The markets change quite a bit in 12 months and we have ways of hedging but your still held accountable to mother nature. We can't just sell grain at a good price and not deliver. The mom and pop store is not a family farm and small businesses can't be compared.

If the world of safety wants to stand in judgement of the way I do things, bring it on. Just spend some time to listen to the needs and concerns of the man your holding in judgement.

Bogger, every farmer is ok with making his life and the lives of his family safer. The problem here is lifestyle changing legislation is being forced through without the legislators consulting with the people who are most effected.....is that the way to do it? Who would agree to that type of BS?

They (the NDP) have bundled many, many changes without thinking it through. The NDP need to hold off on this bill...discuss it with the parties involved....and then pass a bill that is workable for all farmers....not just the large corporations.

The NDP need to put the brakes on this bill, consult with the farmers not just the unions, then pass a bill that works for everyone involved.

I agree, they think we want and need this. They are basically spitting in our eye by forcing it through and calling us dumb for fighting back. They truly think they know whats best.

I agree 100%.... I have no use for the NDP or the way they operate, I just don't buy the argument that agriculture operations should not be regulated - how they should be regulated I have not a clue......

Regulate what? They want to draw a circle around my house and call that unregulated but now my kids can't go out to the shop to build something with the welder like a go cart because its in the regulation that you think I need. My Yard is my business and My business is my life. I walk from my work to my house to have dinner and thats usually about 200ft.

I learned all this growing up on a family farm.....
How to weld
How to break chit
How to fix chit I broke
How to shoot a gun
How to butcher
How to carpenter
How to drive anything that runs
How to respect animals
How to WORK
How to think outside the box
How to be responsible
How to do with out
How to close gates
How to mend fences
How to stand up for what is right
How to respect others
How to take pleasure in the simple things
How to respond when times are tough
How to help others who need it in a moments notice
How to pass these values onto my children
How to learn by watching my parents

and the list goes on...and on...

Only those who have grown up like this can understand what is at stake here !!
We lose millions more to cancer , drunk driving and heart disease every year....
No farmer EVER wants to see anyone hurt on his farm... Ever.
but taking away the family farm is the wrong way to promote safety....
And trust me this is what's this bill will lead too..sooner or later.

I didn't grow up on a farm and I learned all that except welding, shooting, butchering and carpentry.... I can pay people for that chit the important stuff can be learned anywhere it's the teacher not the classroom that matters, I got nothing against farmers but you speak as if the rest of us are lesser for not having been raised on a farm.

Nothing could be further from the truth ,I look at it that I was quite fortunate to have grown up on the farm. This is not a slight against people who were not raised on a farm. That being said , I can see ( and I don't blame you) you will never understand what rural life means to a lot of us.... Simply put it is a life style of freedom of choice . It can not be measured in $$$

In them hills.
I know nothing about farming. I'm just a guy that works in industry, so don't take this personally. It's an honest question.

Why SHOULDN'T a grain bin be considered a confined space?
Because there is no chance of it becoming a hazardous atmosphere.

Not like your standard vessel entry in the patch.
