I put a k&n in my 2010 duramax and I didn't make it out of my back ally before I got "engine power reduced" as soon as I would drive a bit I would get power back but when I slowed down the message would come back. I took it out and put my NAPA gold filter back in and there was no problem. I guessing the filter was over oiled from the factory and wasn't letting enough air in through at low rpm's.

I drilled a couple holes in the cover of the stock housing and put frog skinz over them. Just so it could draw in a bit of warmth from the engine compartment.
Not sure why but I have to run with a winter front when it gets around -5 to -10. otherwise my truck goes into limp mode saying something about the filter being frozen up. Can't remember now exact wording.

2008 Duramax. Had to take it in my first year I got it in 09 because it went into limp mode. They said the air filter froze up.

Mine did that too last winter in Hudson Bay Saskatchewan. I had my winter front on but there was 8" of snow on the road that was really fluffy and it plugged my filter. I had to stop a couple times and clean it out and then it was fine.

My 5.9 cummins sucked a cheap Fram air filter in, we didn't know for a few months. Engine is dusted now, loss of compression, smokes like crazy when first started till it warms up some and builds compression. Blows a ton of oil out the breather. Didn't know of this issue till it happened. Need to run a 4" thick air filter in those trucks. It happened in the winter on a slushy highway.

Seen a brand new 6.7 cummins suck enough snow into the air filter going sledding that the service air filter light kept coming on, told driver to pull over, opened it up and the air box was jammed tight with snow, not even sure how it was still running. Completely stock truck...

Im now very very picky with air filters in new duramax, only stock filters. Check them and make damn sure they are sealing correctly and change often. Lml will suck snow in and or a dirty filter too. I had a stock filter already not fitting correctly in the box and didn't seal, had to replace it. A small amount of dust can destroy your engine in a diesel because of the super high compression.

I wouldn't run no oiled KN piece of crap filter in a diesel, they let too much dust through. Any oiled filter is not for a diesel truck used in dusty terrain. Place filter to light and look at the size of the holes.

Pfft. Been running oiled filters on diesels for 10 years. Never an issue. Never ever even had a bad maf. And I run alot of choking dust mud and snow.
Buy a good quality filter and intake and don't over oil it and your gold. If you can run a pre filter cover for extra protection in the heavy dust. Saves having to pack two filters or more frequent cleaning.

Or listen to LBZ and when you bring your truck in for warranty work because your oiled filter wasn't oil properly or let dust in and you dusted the engine, your warranty will be denied.

Dont believe me, simply Google dusted cummins or diesel and read all the guys that have had it happen.

Oiled filters are just too smart for some to use I suppose.

They've been around for decades. If they were such junk, they wouldn't still be around.

Probably put on a million miles or better with oiled filters. Never a problem. Ironically, the only filter failure I had was on a company truck where the paper pos got wet, and then disentegrated and got sucked into the engine. The fleet went oiled filters after that. No issues other than a couple mafs that needed a cleaning. Minor.

Also had a buddy with an '08 cummins that had a wet paper filter freeze and ruin his day. He's running a dry AFE with a sock on it that seems to work well so far.

I have used an oiled K&N filter for almost 500k Kms on my last duramax with no issues. While not the best of the aftermarket filters, there was no major catastrophe with it.

Like LBZ said, oil filters have to be maintained properly and oiled correctly to function. that's where the problem comes from, some guy doesn't do it right or maintain it.

It's not rocket surgery.
Seen more f ups from guys not changing the paper filter at all than anything else.
