So the BC teachers are going on strike starting Monday for 3 days to protest their demands (dont get me started on that). My daughter who is in grade 7 told me that her teachers have been taking time from class to preach their cause to them. I am sooooo pi$$ed as they have no right to take time from teaching to sell their propaganda to our kids. Grrrrr

Propoganda? I'd rather think of it as the teacher teaching children the facts of life! Isn't that sorta kinda what our children go to school for?

You mean a 15% raise isn't reasonable LOL.

People need to realise that when you go into contract negotiations you ask for the moon and negotiate that down to perhaps a slice of cheese? Just because a group of union members asks for the moon doesn't mean they are truly expecting it.

I suppose it's ok that our gov't voted themselves a raise in the +20% range and the people having no say in it is just fine?

Gotta love Unions. The only place you can not show up for work for 3 days and still have a job. Apparently teachers think 45 grand a year for a first year teacher is below the poverty line. Such BS

Not show up for 3 days and still have a job? You must be refering to them going on strike and not getting paid for 3 days which will in turn save the go'vt of BC millions in unpaid wages. Teachers get their qualifications by going to college and university for years and pay for it out of their own pockets. Wheres the problem?

Yep pretty sick of these whiners! "But it's all about smaller classes, more schools etc" Bullsh*t it is! It's about this ridiculous pay raise they want!

You really need to become informed about the issues and learn the real facts before bashing people that teach your children about life while you are at work.

you forgot the guaranteed pension, full benefits and summers off, xmas and spring breaks etc. After 5 years they are over $75,000 bucks based on max 10 month work calendar.

So whats wrong with a guaranteed pension? Is your pension not guaranteed? If not you should change the administrator of your plan. Is there some kind of a problem with a person getting full benefits? That persons full benfits look after their families health. Whats so wrong about that or why is it ok to bash someone that gets them? Summers off because the schools are closed so that the children can vacation and spend time with their families. Shame on those teachers for taking advantage of things that have been negotiated over the years to make their families lives better.

Sure seems like a really good reason to bash them for wanting to improve their families lives and the learning experience of your children.

sorry guys but a teacher knew what was involved when they got into the teaching field. Did they expect to teach 30 kids (+/-) that would be sitting like robots without distractions etc etc. I personally did not choose to be a teacher because I would not want that for all the tea in China. I am self employed and went to school and paid for it myself so they get no sympathy from this guy. If they dont like it then go and work in the private sector and see how well they have it (I have worked for Parks Canada years ago and would never do it again). There are 2 teachers here in town in their early 50's retired. Good on them but only a pipe dream for many. Again if you read my first post I said that I agree that we need to address class sizes etc but I dont agree with the size of the salary requested at this time.

Anyway, regardless of individuals personal views on the subject, the teacher steps out of line when they preach my child about their cause during class time. There are two sides of the story and if they want to have a debate about it in class then kids should have arguments from both sides.

Just my 2 cents worth.

You are self employed and went to school and paid for it yourself. How do you think teachers earned their degrees? Did you pay for them to get their degrees? Wheres your degree?

You are very apparently one who is extremely jealous about what someone else has that you do not. Seriously!

I was listening to the cbc on this and the 3 day walk-out is about as far as this can go. There was legislation put in place from the last strike that the government can force them to either resign there post or get back to work.

Hows that for democracy!

Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position.

So, when are children are exposed to one side of the story and not both arguments this is propaganda

Don't think anyone is going to argue with that.

Why not it's argueable. Who says what is and isn't taught in school? If they weren't allowed to teach/inform their students about things in life that affect people in all kinds of different ways they wouldn't be doing their jobs.

Maybe forget about teachers and schools?
I know six people that are in there 20's and 30's now that did home schooling and they seemed to learn more than most people that attended school........

Thats not news. Its a fact that properly home schooled students do very well. Not all, but many.

A few years back I had aspirations of becoming a highschool shop teacher. I signed up and became a substitute shop teacher for awhile. Not a chance in hell was I going to continue on with that nightmare. Your children are devils in disguise. Not all, but a good very many are the devils spawn. I wonder where they learned their manners?

Yep teachers have it pretty easy, thats for sure.

If you are not exposing them to the other side of what you call propaganda then you are not doing your children any good at all. Are you? Are you simply allowing teachers to teach your children everything? Man I'd beware of them teachers if i were you.

my pension is not guaranteed by public funds. Like I have said several times, if their careers are so tough and unbearable then move on to the private sector. I know I worked for a union job and hated it so I moved on eventually becoming self employed. That was my choice and I did not inconvenience thousands of people for it. I hold no grudge towards anyone getting full benefits and a great salary but comparatively it is not as bad as some are letting us to believe. However, again like I said before, I personally would not want to be a teacher and they have my full appreciation for what they do as it is not easy dealing with students and parents. But like the old saying goes, if you cant stand the heat....... get out of it. Sorry just my opinion.

sorry I have no jealousy there except for the summers off but being self employed and having staff is rather difficult to get a descent holiday. Staff is well rewarded though :)

They are not saying they can't stand the heat or their careers are so tough and unbearable, you are. You are really sounding like you hate them because they have so many great things going on in their careers that you don't have. Sorry but thats what I'm getting from you.

You are self employed thats great and thats your choice. The teachers made a choice as well. You don't hear teachers bashing others in different careers that are trying to make their lives better for themselves and their families.

hmmmmm dont understand this comment but to avoid a lengthy discussion I strongly feel that a teacher has no business telling my child as to why they feel it is right to strike without giving arguments for both sides which by the way they got scolded for doing so today according to the news. That is my job as a parent to explain. How would you feel if your child's teacher started telling them that the religion they believe is better than yours? Not a good idea eh! They have a predetermined teaching plan which has been approved. Stick with it.

Anyway, I said what I think and I am done with this thread. Don't take offence as none was intended.

funny that you should say that as I was going to say the exact same thing. This is a subject that we wont agree on but all is well.
