I posted this in a different thread but then noticed it was mostly for sledding - even though I have a sled this is a RZR specific question. hopefully this is now in a more appropriate forum

I hope this is in the right threat but just had some questions RE registration/etc for a RZR in BC.

I bought a USED RZR in the fall of 2014. It was a private sale off of KIJIJI.

Went into an insurance place the other day (Baron Insurance, Vernon), and they said because there was no bill of sale I have to go to a local Public Notary and fill out a form. Basically I have to 'convince/tell' her what I pad for it and she fills out form and Notaries, it.

I paid X dollars for RZR. Lets just say it was $12,500.00. The insurance broker states that I will have to pay $1500.00 in TAXES!!!!

QUESTION - is there ANY way around this?

Option A) don't plate, get liability, pay for fines if ticketed

Option B) lube up, bend over, and pay tax, plate fee, and liability. Maybe 'bend' the truth at the Notary's office?

Option C) if this is even an option, I have in-laws in Red Deer is there anyway to save money and reg in their name and plate with red plates?

I don't mind paying the plate fee and the liability, but to fork out $1500 would kinda suck.

thanks

Simon

If they would agree to it ( I wouldn't), you could transfer ownership to AB relates and go that route. they ju leave te sled a your place to use while they are back in AB. this could go sideways rather quickly I'm afraid.

It's no different if you buy a car a house a sled or a RZR......they want their tax money.
the only way out of it is if you owned it before you moved to BC then there is a settlers clause but you need to prove it with a Bill of Sale.
why don't you have a bill of sale??? Is that thing hot? Because if it is and you register it and it comes up stolen your out a RZR and your $12500. Get a bill of sale

I agree with this, you won't get out of paying the taxes. That is what is behind the whole registration thing (IMO) If you can't find the guy you bought it from you can get anyone to write a bill of sale, if it has never been registered they have no idea who may actually own it. Like aocbiz said though if it has been reported stolen as soon as the serial number goes in you will probably lose it.

Like it was stated earlier, when you moved to BC you can declare what they call settlers effects, then you don't pay tax. Good luck

If it's a family gift I think your good, no tax. I'd lie like a rug...they have no way of knowing its shape, it could be trashed. As long as it's reasonable I'm sure It will work, less tax. If tax was paid in Alberta I think with a bill of sale you only need to pay the 7% pst
last of all I was told by a insurance Comany...if you bought it second hand before 2010 and have proof of ownership you don't pay the tax????. Need to look into this further.
might be easer to get a fake plate made up. I'm sure they will never check on it. They see a plate, think tax is paid and the dude is legit, they move on.

We have been told the same thing about no tax if purchased before July 1 2010. I personally have a problem trusting the government when they say they aren't going to go after tax money, but time will telll.
