i have a new yard and shop in edmonton that has an abundance of extra space that im trying to figureout what to do with. I was thinking of picking up a couple open deck trailers, maybe a couple enclosed in a few sizes and renting them out.

My question is, does anyone actually rent trailers or for the most part does everyone have their own stuff? i was kind of thinking between a group of 4 guys the chances of them needing a trailer is slim?

you can rent enclosed and open trailers in Edmonton but none are really setup for snowmobiling.

Thanks!

I thinks its a good idea, I actually rent trailers from a place downtown in Edson when I need one, like if I need an enclosed to move something, like buying furniture in the city, etc.

Car haulers, and trailers to haul bikes seem to be big in rentals.
Also something to transport atv/utv’s

Most of us with sleds have a way to haul them, so that market is really limited.

I think you need to do the complete package, rent the trailer with 2 sleds, beacons. Have it setup to camp inside. Make sure it's half ton towable.

Basically your renter pulls up, hooks on and drives off Friday afternoon with everything they need to ride. They unload the sleds, camp in it, ride Saturday and Sunday morning, drop it all back off on Sunday afternoon.

This allows occasional sledders to get out riding without having to own the expensive equipment, or allows experienced riders to introduce novice riders in an easy to organize package.

Its more work on you as the renter to maintain the machines, and more liability insurance, and of course it's seasonal and a year like this one your business would be slow.

Kinda the only way I see this working.

My concern with rentals like that Sean would be the insurance cost to you.

I think it's a good idea but depending on deposits and daily rates it could be a hard go

The problem i see with these rental business’s is that they may not have the same protections established as say a commercial rental company. There is that risk of the “hi my name is John Smith” “and this is my visa number” and that trailer as well as John Smith disappears never to be seen again.

You prob have theft insurance if you never see it again. But you will need to play “who has the bigger balls” in the civil claims court if it gets returned all fawked up.

Hey Sean , it’s Billy that rented that trailer and I am in butt F&@$ no where and the wheel bearing and axle are pooched .
How you going to handle this ? Send another trailer or someone to repair ?
What’s your plan as in a hurry and need this looked after .

These are the calls you can get . 😉
Always wiring , lights , brakes , trailer plug is wrecked , wheel bearing checked .
Can cut into your fun time .

Your repair costs will eat up any profits you'd make and you'll also be adding a whole lot of extra stress to your life. People love wrecking rentals and good luck getting money out of them after they do.

When I lived in Calgree, down the street from me was DTS Trailer Rentals. Now called "Without a Hitch trailer rentals"

When it was DTS, they had a couple open utility, car and equipment trailers, and about 6 enclosed from, small singles to 24'

Most of their advertising was on FB and through word of mouth. After the first year, they really got busy. Very reasonable rates and loved cash deals, to screw trudy. But it also got to the point, that one of them had to run it full time.

When I lived in Edmonton, I would go to Trailers Unlimited to rent an enclosed.

I think you would do good with a sled trailer rental place Sean. Check with your insurance what they need and get a card reader for your phone. So you can accept a damage deposit from CC's

Good luck (y)

part of the back story that i didn't mention was that i already have a business running in this facility with accounts people, collections team, small claims specialist, credit/debit card machines, invoicing softwares, insurances. the whole 9 yards. So i am not worried about that end of it.

But like PFI said though, its the hassles that go along with it that would fall on me. So for that reason, im out LOL. for now

I think you should go for it. Start with 4 trailers, set up with bearing buddies.

Factory Outlet Trailer, would give you a killer deal on 4 trailers purchased at once

Sled trailers not sure would be to busy. Most people I’d have the toys have a way of hulling them. Now car haulers, dump trailers and cargo trailers that could be good. For most people those are once in awhile type trailers so makes more since to rent than buy.
