My wife and I are really new to sleds and want to look at learning the techniques for riding here and in the mountains. (Safety, side hilling, what not to do, what to do etc). Anyone do that locally here?

Jason,

For safety (especially mountain safety) I completely recommend going to a Zacs Tracs AST1 course. there is one this sunday in Edmonton. It is 8 hours of learning but covers the basics (and a bit more).

As far as techniques, in my opinion, the best bet is to get out and ride with people who are patient and willing to show you the ropes. Any time we are riding locally or other, you are more than welcome to come along. I'm sure Ian & Arlene would be happy to have to go along with them as well. You only get better with practice..... the video's and papers give you some tips, but its putting it into practical use where you will get better!

Thanks! I went out with Arlene last Sunday and she is great! I agree the more we get to ride the better we will be.

Thought there might be some basic instruction around though so I didn't have to hold anyone up.

That said, I appreciate the offer go with you guys. We will certainly take you up on that.

Some of the safety companies do offer a "snowmobile operators course" which is required in industry for people in things like seismic and geomatics.....

It is a very basic course from what I understand but might give you what you are looking for?

If you want to do a beginner mountain trip, get a hold of Curtis at Varda in Valemount and he could likely put you in touch with a guide, who could take you to a very mild meadow area just so you can can get the feel of what deep snow is like. See if its your thing, then pursue the avalanche training etc. Insist on more of an instructor than a guide I suppose.

Well I tell ya what.... The GBCA is getting POUNDED right now over 10cm in the past hour and still snowing...

I shovelled the deck then the fire-pit area and a path back to the hot tub....by the time I was done there was another 3-5cm on the deck...

Always interesting to take a Zak's Avy course and have someone come flying up in a panic needing help because "there has been an Avalanche".
Certainly hits home, right Tyler.

Oh, they got the Peep out safe sand sound.
