Anybody ever seen a sled running on alcohol? Some benefits of alcohol include a cooler combustion temp, and higher compression ratios (up to 20:1). With the big turbo boosts on the 4 strokes and the higher stock compressions we are seeing to contend with emissions, I got to thinking if anyone out there was running alcohol in their sled (besides methanol in the washer fluid) and that I have never really seen a true alcohol sled. I know they are making banshee's run on alky down south, as fuel prices for race gas and av gas rise, E-85 is still very cheap................

I rode Darren Boychucks RZ350 running on alcohol (after making fun of it because the gearing was so tall it would take 10 mins to get out of first gear) and holy chit, was i ever wrong. That was the most wild bike I've ever ridden lol.

I can even say it was the fastest bike in the world technically. It just had a sidecar on for the world record.

But back to running is sled on alcohol, I don't know how well it would run in cold weather, because in the middle of summer, the carbs and intake were iced up, and burns a lot more fuel than if we're running on gasoline.

But that would be a wild ride. 350cc's was insane, I couldn't image an 800 running on it.

I think a E-85 mix in a non intercooled turbo sled would make great power and out perform a gas intercooled engine . A strait methanol engine will make more power but in real world situation would cause some inherent headaches with the environment that the snowmobile has to function in. Cold weather starting would be a complete bitch and not to mention that methanol is hydroscopic and soaks up water like a mofo .A NA gas engine runs around 12.5-1 AFR and a boosted gas runs around 11-1 AFR the methanol NA engine will make power at 5.3 -1 AFR and a boosted methanol engine is 3.3 to 4.1 AFR . Fuel demands are roughly 3x that of a gas engine and that opens up a lot more headaches than the average sled head can handle .

not sure about alcohol, but methanol eats the internals of your engine. makes huge power, but the TBO is very low.

Engines run on Methanol , and yes it is extremely corrosive to untreated aluminum parts . Every part of the fuel system must be anodised and after the engine is run it must be flushed clear with WD 40 or gasoline .

Just not practical at all, very corrosive, methanol has an affinity for water and wants to absorb as much as it can, 1/2 the range of gasoline. Very toxic by the way apparently if you drink only 10 ml you can go blind. I work with it every day, it is colorless, odorless, burns with a colorless flame. Wish I could find a cool use for it because I order the stuff by the tank truck load.

This thread reminded me of a wicked creation a couple of years ago out of Kelowna, CR Racing :D Im not sure what happened with this demon or if anyone managed to ever hang on to it riding, rumor has it made 750+ hp.

Those guys were playing with Nitromethane mix . They would of done better if they dropped in a Pro fuel engine from a nitro bike , at least that engine can handle the power .
