Don't have a dog in the fight here but I remember seeing all the comments and suppositions that this new Doo engine was designed and built with boost in mind ?? Not sure if those ideas were the result of inferences or suggestions from Doo engineers (or maybe salesmen) or just Doo zealots needing additional reasons to justify a purchase, but there sure seems to be a vocal backlash now against anyone who boosts or is thinking of it. I get it, unrealistic to expect full warranty if you choose to boost but I would think it should maybe be a bit dependant on type of failure , which component etc. probably similar with other brands but I recall way more talk about this new 850 being built to boost, am I wrong ?

Although you're just trying to stir the pot I'll bite. Most of the fanfare was about the design of the crank- considerably beefier and bolted mains should in theory stand up to boost better. No one said anything about the pistons which seem to be the problem everyone is experiencing which could be attributed to poor design or maybe even some bad fueling. Time will tell.

Not yet, didn’t get it over to Dave until yesterday afternoon, checked it with buds and found no codes that I didn’t already know about that are unrelated. Leak down and borroscope will tell more today. I did talk to dealer again, a couple of them actually, won’t name them but they both said BRP is on the warranty war path, any and all motor work, even if it’s just a piston, will require pictures and a full buds report.

Had mine checked this morning. Dealer got 114 and 115. Tech said compression on the 850 is only supposed to be 119. All good.

How do you get around it then Fred? If warranty says they want it then they want it?

really? because at this level it is very boost friendly motor. The XM from factory was around 140. being down the 115 mark would mean pump gas friendly at 5lbs for sure.

First factory boosted 2-stroke 2019?

Really. Time will tell i guess. My turbo is on its way.

My buddy's sled just hit the shop and I guess the mag ring turned and scored cylinder and piston it's a2017 850 165..... I tested my boost it Xm 2015 800 174 today and mine has 150 psi on both cylinders at wot.... but if the pistons can't handle stock conditions not sure what will happen under boost loads

Depends on what elevation you test at

2800 feet in alberta has different numbers than 700 feet here in sicamous


125-130 at 3000 ish feet on a stock ptek and etech is good and normal

The comment was made by BRP that this engine was built to rival the 4strokes for longevity, from what I have read and buddies 17 850 cutting the engine in half I really just see another 2 stroke time bomb. JMO

So there must be huge gains to be had by throwing a high compression head on one of these wouldnt there?

Yup hi comp heads should knock the ring guides off the pistons even quicker.... good luck
