2010 RMK 600 - Runs then dies....runs then dies.....repeat

Hi All,

We are having some issues with a 2010 RMK 600. The machine has just over 2000 miles and has been lady driven its entire life. One weekend my parents were driving it at the lake and then it literally just died. They let it sit attempting to sort out potential problems (looking at the usual, plugs, wires, loose hoses etc). After a few minutes they attempted to start the sled and it started. The machine ran for a few more minutes then died in the exact same way. This pattern continued on for some time until it was eventually parked. My dad let the machine completely cool and started it. He let it idle for several minutes on end...and then you guessed it; the machine dies again.

He paid attention to the sequence of events and whats happens is the highlight and tail light go out first, then the gauge goes out, then the machine just sputters until it shuts off. You let it sit long enough and it starts right back up again only for it to do it again. He has a sled mechanic close to home and he took the machine there. The mechanic has been unable to determine any issues with the machine, other than its doing the above. Voltage on the stator or appropriate and everything seems normal until it dies. This mechanic has been scratching his head trying to find out whats going on. I found out tonight that apparently now the sled is having a hard time idling no matter what the scenario is now.

This sled does not have electric start (therefor no battery) and it is of course fuel injected.

Some initial things we had thought or were thinking:
- stator (doesn't seem to be the case but who knows)
- coil
- computer
- fuel pump

We are really stumped on this one. The machine was running wonderful on the day it started acting up.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a way of checking your ECU or taking it off and taking it in, might as well get your VR checked as well

You need a new voltage regulator. Continuing to run it will eventually fry ecu.

Thanks for the fast response guys!! Phone calls will be made to source some new parts. We are going to try find a seperate ECU to try and now a new voltage regulator.

Second The Voltage Regulator. Mine did the exact same thing and was very common on those machines. Sounds like you are a lucky one that went low voltage and saved your computer.

Have same sled. Voltage regulator.

Get a new voltage regulator from Polaris. I'm not sure if the aftermarket one made by SPI will protect the ECU if it fails. I wouldn't bother with the ECU at this point in time.

Well, some bad news unfortunately. It turns out that the mechanic who has been working on the sled got the sled to a point where it wouldn't even idle anymore. My dad went ahead and ordered the new voltage regulator from the dealership and they tried it tonight. No luck. Neither VR fires the sled and itll make the occasional pop and bang like it wants to start. Is it safe to assume the ECU is fried??

I am thinking if the Mechanic kept starting it the ecu is now fried. Or I was wrong to begin with,it has happened once before!

at his point wont hurt to install new regulator and try. Old one may be completely fried now also

They tried the new VR with no luck

Any word on what the problem was? I have a 2010 RMK 600 as well. My sled just started doing the exact same thing as your original post described!
