hey, so my dad is looking to buy a brand new sled, so what should he get? he thinks either a new 09 M1000 sno-pro 153" or a new 09 summit 800 154" so what do you think he should get? any input would be appreciated!

If he is concidering the Cat at all he should go with an M8. I ride an XP so you know what I would suggest.

I will get the popcorn going.

ok , i thought it would lead to this. I would honestly prefer non bias opinions(if there is a such thing) from people who may have actually driven both sleds, or can relate to our dilemma.
I am not biased (yet!!) and do think that both are very good either way, but just not sure which one deserves my hard earned money!!
Thanks sledders

( 154 and 163 ), if your going with an m chassis go with the m8 for sure, but i definately suggest the xp

This is the second suggestion to go with the m8 over the m10. Octane.....why do you say that?

I can only say what i like about my sled, M8 153, this is from one weekend of riding. On the trail i can ride the dips and whoops up and down sitting on the seat and it is no issue. I can ride the same trail and knock the tops off the bumps off and land each time knowing where the sled will go, it isnt a crap shoot and hope it will go where i want it. In the deep flat areas the sled is easy to flip flop and floats very well. For what i do for climbing it is easy, no not a high mark guy, Although one of the guys i ride with does and says the sled is great. Very easy to side hill and holds any line. Now going down hill in really deep snow, it seemd to hit me right in the face. Take it for what it is worth

Go with whatever you can get the best deal on either sled is great Boydo has an M1000 153 he loves it I rode it for abit it has great power, Myself I didn't like the feel of the steering on it. I just had the first ride on my new XP and it took half a day to get used it but I am very happy with it

I owned both sleds last year and rode the xp three days out of every four just because of the weight. i loved the m1000 power but hated the weight of it.

I own a 2009 M1000 sno pro 153 and I've ridden the 09 XP 146 as well.
2 completely different beasts. The XP has higher-revving plant with a bit more rank of a power band, and more track speed due to being a bit shorter. Because of this, the Summit is snappier in terms of burst speed but the M1000 WILL prevail in the steep and deep. The M1000 is a lower 7800rpm mill with a non-peaky & SMOOTH power band, building horsepower and torque that's elusive to the rider since it's not a high RPM screamer like the summit.
The M1000 has a super-nimble chassis but takes more strength & 'nuts' to maneuver than the Summit. Farting around in the pow and boondocking all day long? The XP is going to be more forgiving and perhaps more fun. Hill climb's, side hilling, chutes etc. The M1k owns. There's no doubt about that. M8 is a bit lighter in the front, obviously.. but the torque advantage of the m1k is nearly 20ft/lbs. I piped/canned mine and put a light weight seat on and the weight difference now is only marginal. The 2010 800 H.O. that cat now produces offers exceptional HP and speed, but it's big bro will still out-climb and out-pull in the steep and deep.
Fuel consumption? You will burn more fuel with the M1000, perhaps because the pistons are nearly the size of 1lb coffee cans. In comparison to the summit 800, the differnce in fuel consumption is only marginal. My buddy and I last weekend rode Silent Pass, Golden and we both burnt a full tank, added our 10L jerry's and by the time we got back to the trucks I was pretty much on fumes and he had somewhere between an 1/8 and a 1/4 tank left.
In summary, If you choose the M1000, you need to grow a set of balls and learn to own the machine, or it will own you. That's the biggest thing I've found. Once you've overcome this part, it'll be a long-lasting love affair.
My 2 cents.

my guess is that the m1000 you rode with was an '07 or '08 which are 22 lbs heavier than the '09+ m1000's, that or perhaps the rider was a little lacking in the throttle/confidence department because in my experience, a new XP doesn't out climb a new m1k, not to mention going against all logic.
