Does it smell like its burning rich?
no, not at all....which makes me wonder if Mitch might be onto something....

Mine ran like your Troy, ran rough for a bit then just quit.I figured the heat off the engine was causing the gas to evaporate out of the carb. (But then again i'm an electrician, not a mechanic).
I'm going to try a heat shield and see what happens, another cheap idea. keep 'em coming bud :D

Doesn't matter how cheap they are if they don't work. Have you rolled your quad? That was when the trouble started with mine. Flipped it over backwards, seemed to overheat without causing fan to run until I had the rad flushed. It was strange.

yeah, it's been upside down a few times, but the last time was months before it started acting up. first time it quit I thought it was the carb, tore it apart out in the hills and actually found a piece of sand in the mainjet. put it together and it made it back to camp.

I caught a mushy snowbank on a logging road one spring taking a corner too tight, flat out in high and it slurped me in. that poor xt chased me down the road barrell rolling. bent it up a bit but ran fine....lol. before that happened, on the same day, I broke 2 cv joints, and blew the front brake caliper off the diff housing. and the exhaust pipe fell off. sounds awesome

I would try the heat tape on the gas tank for sure. I had a 250 trailblazer that I put a Aaen pipe, did some clutching work and a K&N air filter. Since it was pushing out a bit more HP it was getting hotter than normal (being an air cool motor). If it was a hot day and I was doing some riding in muskeg, or lots of slow stuff it would sputter, pop, bang, or if I revved the hell out of it, it would be fine for a minute then do it again. I put some heat tape on the underside of the gastank to keep some of the motor heat off of it, solved the problem. it's worth a try.

fuel tank on the outty is under the seat and towards the rear, but the carb is less than 4 inches from the exhaust header and tucked in above the trans pretty close the the jug. I'm wondering maybe if it isn't boiling the fuel in the carb and vapour locking like Summiteer suggested.

You have some kind of vapour lock, kinda like on the old grizzlies it sounds like...........Try taking it for a run with minimal plastics.

did that last night with the fan wired to stay on, removed side panels and plastic shrouds around the rad inside the wheelwells, same result
