Need some help. My son's machine broke down on us last weekend. We're new to the sport and would like to try to fix ourselves. Have mechanical background, just never worked on a sled before.

Problem - driving out of Silent Pass and heard a clunk and sled came to a stop. Engine running fine, clutch and belt engaging, just no power to the track.

Is this a tough fix? Anyone help?

thanks,

X

Sounds like maybe you broke a drive chain, just remove the muffler and pipe and pull the cover off the chaincase for a look see. Not difficult to do, nothing technical involved. A fairly common problem with any brand sled with miles on them.

Sounds like it might be a chain. Does the track turn? Try rotating it by hand both ways. Check suspension parts rubbing, broke pieces binding track.

If track rotates, check chain.

Use allen wrench to remove drain plug on bottom of chaincase. Drain into catch pan.
Remove exhaust can.
Remove chaincase cover and inspect chain and tightener. If chain isn't broke, I would still replace it. Replace cover and fill with oil. You can use oil from dealer$$$ or I used synthertic ATF. Up to you.

If chain is good, check jackshaft between secondary clutch and chaincase.
Check brake isn't binding.

Hope this helps.

I had a driveshaft break once. It broke right in the middle of the driver so you could not tell it was broken by looking at it. The driver held it in place but when you tried to move the sled you could see that only part of the shaft was turning and the driver did not turn at all. Worth looking at if all else looks good.

It could be the key on the jackshaft/secondary, spin the secondary and check if jackshaft turns. If it turns pull chain case cover. You may need to change the oil in the chaincase anyway but I have a six inch thick foam mattress in my shop that I use to put under the sled as I lay them on there side before I remove the chain case cover (turn off fuel valve first), this way you do not lose any oil. This works well for trouble shooting in the field. I have alot of parts for that sled, secondary's, jackshaft, chaincase, manual etc. Just let me know if I can be of any assistance. I am 30 minutes outside of Calgary.

If you haven't already, purchase the Polaris Deep Snow Manual for this machine, it's worth it's weight in gold
