2001 RMK 800 one cylinder firing

My 01' RMK 800 seems like it's only running on one cylinder. I just rebuilt the whole motor and am getting 155 psi on both sides, there is spark to both plugs and I am stumped where to go next. I pulled the spark plug wires while it was running and when I pull the pto side the engine stays running on one cylinder but when I pull the mag side the engine shuts off. Is this enough to fairly say the pto side cylinder isn't running? It seems like there is some oil being spit out somewhere around the exhaust ports or at least landing on the exhaust and smoking up.


I'd appreciate some thoughts or suggestions on what to check. Thought I had finally fixed all the problems with this guy and now this came up.

Did you try fresh plugs. Maybe it has week spark and isn't sparking under compression.

I haven't tried brand new plugs, but I did put in new plugs just before the motor blew up on me so they have only had like 2 hours of riding on them and they look like they are in decent condition.

Sounds like it's fuel related. Are you getting gas to the mag side cylinder? Are the carbs sitting properly in the intake boots?

Carbs are sitting properly, I pulled them off and gave them a cleaning after sitting all summer. I am having a rich fuel problem ever since I've owned it, fuel literally dumping out of my exhaust. No cracks on the intake boots, choke not stuck or sticking. So I'm trying to determine if the rick mixture is flooding the cylinder causing the misfire or if it's unrelated.

Possible faulty temperature sensor? Had my 2000 rmk 800 temporature sensor go and it would barely run and sounded like it was running on one cylinder.

Hmm I could check that out, not sure what to check on it tho to know if it's good or not. Wouldn't want to just buy a new one and hope it fixes the problem.

Have you replaced the needle valves in the carbs?

Hmm I could check that out, not sure what to check on it tho to know if it's good or not. Wouldn't want to just buy a new one and hope it fixes the problem.

The resistance of the sensor should be around 2500 ohms at room temperature. From what I can find out it should be around 300 ohms in boiling water. Supposedly less than 195 ohms in boiling water is faulty but I can't verify that so take that as a maybe.

No I have't replaced the needle and seats yet, they are pretty pricey as they come as a complete unit with the floats. I guess this weekend I'm going to be checking the reeds, temp sensor and fuel pump. If those don't fix the problem I'll be rebuilding the carb and fuel pump next.

You might want to try spraying electrical contact cleaner on some QTips and clean the inside of the spark plug boots, as these had a habit of getting carboned up pretty bad and i would get a lousy running sled. I used to clean them up after every ride. I still do this till this day on my sleds. Good luck.

i just went thru same thing on my 550 no spark one side..changed stator.CDI. plugs.. But i never changed the spark plug caps. when i changed em from side to side..it ran on the side it didnt before..duh,, all that work and all it was the spark plug cap..been rebuilding these things since the 60s. like my Father in law used to say,,The older we get,The dumber we get,,

check the little clip on the top of the carb if the needle is not in the proper position no fuel will get to the carb
