Good day my son is 15 and has purchased a project as his first truck. It’s a 2001 GMC 1500 Z71. We are having fun wrenching on it we’ve pretty much rebuilt the front end and have to replace the transfer case with a rebuilt one.

Anyways I do have a concern with the transmission the previous owner said it was rebuilt about 30,000kms ago but it seems to hold onto second gear when you are on the hammer. It does shift but revs up pretty good. When driving normally it shifts fine.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks he paid for the truck with his own money. We bought it knowing it needed some front end work and we knew the transfer case is toast. I’m helping him with some (most lol) of the parts cost to make sure it’s road save etc. We were hoping the tranny issue was just an adjustment or sensor issue of some sorts.

As for the rest of the truck we are replacing the rockers and giving the lowers and bumpers some Armaguard love. Other than that he’s own his own to save up for any other goodies

That's awesome Scott! Great way for him to hopefully respect his ride!

it is possible it could be a solenoid but in my experience it's toast. Good news is 4l60e are cheap as borsch. I might even have one sitting at the farm, I'll look on days off
I know I got a roll up tonneau cover id sell for 100 if interested.

Any idea how to test the solenoid? I know parts are pretty cheap and readily available for this truck that's kinda why we went for a 1500 , we looked at a few $7500+ scrap yard ready Rangers. I may be interested in the tranny but will have to pass on the box cover as I have one at the shop for it already

or when you rebuild the 4L60e rebuild it to 4L65e spec then it goes back in with out reprogramming the ecu and dinking around with driveshafts, transmission mounts and exhaust.

I would be thinking possible the pressure manifold switch which can be changed by removing the pan. If it was clutches generally oil will be dark and feel like slipping with foot heavy on throttle. If you change the switch torque to 95 inch lbs
