hello S&M im looking for some advice for my 98 rmk 600. its got 3100 miles and im thinking of doing the top end. one of the cylenders is getting a little low on compresion (112 ) the other is good (120). it starts good and runs ok. How much would it be to rebiuld the top end (pistions, gaskets & seals)?

I did my top end in my 05 900 for about $300 ish. SPI pistons and polaris gaskets! cheap insurance because the 05 900 had bad pistons and when a skirt breaks it is good by engine but it was a 900 and they blow all the time lol!

take the cylinders to cycle works machine shop. have them check and hone or bore the cylinders and match a set of wiseco pistons to the cylinders.

gaskets and pistons will run around 500 and cylinder boring is 70$ per cylinder if required.

no sence in slapping a set of pistons into it if you cant tell if they are damaged or not without the correct tools.

and wiseco is a far superior product.

and let it begin!

Drive it for a while yet with that many miles as there good till like 6 or 7 thousand miles. If you think you want to open it up then for starter get your cylinders mesured, if there ok then give it a light hone and put new piston and gaskets. If there out to lunch then you need rebuilt cylinders as you cannot bore those as they came with nicasil coating from the factory on that year and model. Cylinder cost $350 exchange each. Polaris piston are good on that model, piston kit from polaris $198 each, includes piston, rings, circlip and piston pin. You will need a wrist pin brg and gaskets. Good luck.

I'm starting to think you are sponsored by Wiseco Maxwell. :D

A-L: If you put in Wiseco's or any other forged piston, make sure you let them warm up good before you ride, that's all. Should be around the $500 mark to do it right.

maybe have the bottom end checked as well, as alot of rebuild motors will take out the bottom end. worn pistons and cylinders usually lead to bad bearings,
It's your money and you take your chances.

If your on a budget use the Spi pistons if not use Wiseco. Have the piston to wall clearance checked and get the cylinders touch honed, they're nickasil so you're limited with your p/w. Cycle Works like Maxwell said or locally Tom at Mots machine can help you out. Bottom end...well it could always use the big bearing upgrade but now it's costing more $$$. Depends on your budget. if the pistons and cylinders are worn out, what makes you think the bearings are good. seems like cheap insurance to me, have them checked. to many stories of new top end a week ago and now needs new bottom end. just check a few poss on here.

Ebay is your friend.

I have got parts from the top guy before. But went spi i think. The pistions in the lower add. Put them in my 98 rmk 700 never had any problems. Never ran wiseco before................Shop around and save money.

Why i like ebay. well lets see. I called a dealer in calgary for a pistion for my generator. he says $91. I didn't even ask how much for the head gasket and the crankcase gasket. He didn't have the piston in stock. The motor isn't worth that nor the generator. IT was free.Anyway.Ebay well piston 24.99 head gasket $1.99 crankcase gasket $1.99. Everything shipped to my door. $35 Got it in a week.

With a boring machine. Then you re-nickasil them. Pretty simple process to figure out, but it's still over your head? Let me know if you need some pictures to help you understand.

Same old LHF, same old BS.

I didnt realize he was looking for a big bore kit. The simplest method would be to buy a good set of used 700 jugs and slap them on. Would be much cheaper.

My first set of pistons lasted almost 7500 miles in our 98 RMK 600. I am sure it would have ran 10,000 miles if I had left it stock and not run pipes for awhile. It ran great until the last mountain ride when the compression dropped from 125 a side to 90 a side.

I checked my bottom end and it was in perfect condition. I put stock pistons back into it. The new pistons were graphite coated on the skirts. I had a local shop hone the cylinders and I used new stock gaskets. She runs like new again.

I ran a couple of modified 700 engines in the sled before I put the 600 back in. You can put 700 cylinders and pistons on the 600 as it ran the same bottom end. If you go that route look for the early 97 jugs as they had more agressive porting and they make better torque and power.

Holy f^(K - nothing like having to explain it 5 times to ya huh? It's called overboring your stock cylinders, not a Big Bore. And it's not a big deal to overbore. Learn the terminology. Let's move on shall we?
