Guys im working on a ol ss just wondering what compression should be on this unit? Its the old points unit and can be tough to start. Cleaned points and checked everything there seems fine. Just a little tough to start. Thanks Steve.

Anything over 100 psi on a Doo of any kind is acceptable for running Steve. The more the better

Goes without saying but did you dismantle and clean all the jets in carbs? Does this sled have a choke or does it use the primer system? If it has the choke system make sure the plungers actually move when you move the lever.

Know those sleds had a primer, one we had was a 80 and cold was hard to start yet the 81 in the group had no issue, but the 81 had a longer pull rope from factory and after going longer rope on 80 and getting a little more pull on rope it seemed better. just something to see for the 80's rope was very short and not much pull on it. other than that i would check carbs, fun sled in the day for ditch banging

You might want to check the "cam" on the crank that actuates the points, i currently have a 503 with the same issues and the lobes is wore approx .020" which buggered the timing making it a bear to start.... best option after this is to convert to CDI....
