1.5 lb/1 HP AXYS build

So it is an AXYS but only about 16"-18' long RC sled that my son Colby is building. It has 10 HP and weighs about 15lbs. His goal is to get it on the snow this season. He has 3D printed the entire sled including the rubber track, gears, rails, chassis, skis etc. Only the shocks, brushless motor, battery and bearings are bought. The initial testing broke the rails and ripped the track apart so the rails have been reprinted thicker (twice) and the track is being redesigned with SS pins to hold each section together. He also is machining some parts out of aluminum now that he has a small CNC machine. He has hundreds of hours in it and I am proud at what he has achieved so far. I will update this thread when he has more to show. If you have not watched RC sleds go on youtube, it is worth taking a look. They can literally jump out of the snow.

Colby does not give up easily. He will find a solution if it is possible. The track he is building now will be very strong. I suspect he will have to limit the power just to control the darn thing.

They are a lot of fun but breakdowns happen to. I ended up drilling my driveshaft and gear and putting a threaded pin from rc truck driveshaft in. Keeps from stripping splines out of the plastic gear. What will go next…

What cell Lipo he running? And I doubt that Amazon motor has 10HP. At 12.2V would be 680A to make 10HP with a 90% EFF. Brushless motor. 746W/HP*10hp*90%EFF = 8288W/12.2V = 679.4Amps. That's a 3S pack, Even a 6S would be 24.4V and 340A to make 10HP. But still, Sweet RC, from a guy who has been into RC for over 40 years LOL

All the Poo guys will be happy that your son was able to build something that Polaris couldn't - a fully functioning snowmobile.

OK all joking aside - Tell your son that is very impressive. You've got a pretty amazing kid there.

That is really cool!

Back in the day, I did one that I thought was pretty neat. Took one of those pathetic “New Bright” or whatever chinese toys, gutted it, and installed a .12 nitro motor and drive system in it. This little smoker made about 5X the power than the original electrics, so things needed beefed up. Made a floating, spring loaded rear axle for track tension, bearings to replace plastic bushings throughout, etc. I hid all the RC gear under the seat, and even had the pull starter come out in the proper location,

Wow, that little ski would kick my arse at 1.5lb/hp, my ski runs 2.1lbs/hp.
That is awesome, cool little ski.

BTW, at my current weight my sled would require almost another 150hp to match little ski. LOL
