Outboard all the way. Lighter less maintenance as you don't have to winterize etc. Generally faster out of the whole and for what you are using it for outboard would be my choice. I have had both.

An 18 Cat will have more snap on the bottom end than your doo did. I rode cat for years and now on Doo and that was my biggest complaint was that I missed the bottom end grunt on the Cats! I have since re-clutched the Doo to help with bottom end.
