How are the zero turns in uneven terrain? I'm looking as well at them. I have some ditches that drop drastically. Not sure if the zero turn could handle the sudden ups and downs.

my dad has some good ditches on his yard as well, he's got a John Deere Zero Turn that has independant Hydrostatic pumps for each driving wheel, he likes it, when he tested one that did NOT have the independant pumps he found it very hard to cut the ditches.

its "little" things like that that make one machine more expensive than others....in the end you usually get what you pay for.....things are cheaper for a reason

Cutting with a zero-turn in uneven terrain such as road ditches is nerve racking for the first few times and can give you quite a thrill. Since the front wheels are on castors, shifting to neutral will have the front end slowly drift downwards. Also sudden movements going slowly uphill will provide some nice wheelies. After the first few hours, its no big deal.
I did find my zero turn doesn't follow uneven terrain as well as my riding mower with the same deck. But I just cut runs or ditches before hand for a better looking cut.

my dad bought a Kubota zero turn, its nice and all, but personally I prefer the front mount mowers myself.

Went through the zero turn , tractor thing 10 years ago and ended up with tractor.
Reason wanted one thing that did everything. ( mow grass, snow blow, rototiller and so on)
Was between Kubota and JD and went with JD due to pricing.
Maintain over 2 acres and tractor has work perfect me .
Use the front end loader with forks lots.
4x4 is really handy also for the snow blowing.
First thing a acreage owner should buy is a tractor with all the attachments IMO. Lol

Bought a Country Clipper two years ago. Works very well and I find it cuts much faster than a tractor mower partly because they seem to have the blades turning faster than any other mower I have seen - Three blades and the sound of the blades is louder than the engine. Compared this against Cub Cadet & John Deere. Chose this one as it is much more rugged and with the front wheel pivot, the rough terrain is not an issue in our yard. I cut two acres of grass now in an hour and 10 minutes. Also like the easy to service flip up deck on this unit.

My mom and dad just bought a 54" zero turn Cub Cadet with the steering wheel from Rec-Tech in Lloydminster... Super cheap too cause it was a 2014.

it all depends on your yard. I've used a regular small lawnmower and a zero turn on my half acre and I personally prefer the regular one. Its alot more convenient for me to put it in gear and then drive with one hand (so I have a free hand for beer) since theres not much turning involved anyways. I find the zero turn I used (husky) was hard to keep in a straight line, it always wanted to turn. On the other hand my parents cut about 2 acres and they prefer there small tractor. It originally had a mid mount deck but they went to a 3 point hitch mower for a wider cut and easier cleaning/servicing.

Can any recommend a residential zero turn mower 3-4k? Looking for something with 48-54" deck. Looked at husky's and toros but don't no much about them. Seeing that cub cadet rec tech has 54" deck might consider with the steering wheel but would like some input if anyone has experience with the small residential ones. 1.5 acres.

I'm guessing you want to buy something that will last many years and you probably want good accessibility to parts in the years to come ...spend a bit more, buy a Deere
new JD Z425...48" deck....$4600 + tax
same model ...54" deck....$4700 + tax

Im pretty happy with our 54" cub cadet w/steering wheel. I dislike the two handle units and cannot make straight lines. We cut mowing time from 5-6hrs to 1.75hrs from our old 42" POS. After 3 years I have had zero problems that werent directly a result of abuse(hitting rocks etc). $3850otd I think I paid.

LOL. Funny thing is I still haven't moved. The place we were going to buy got hit by lightning and burnt to the ground. Still looking for a place but right now the kubota is sitting in the shop covered up. I did try it out at my brothers a few times, and it sure is a nice unit to ride, and the tall stuff that I played in(10-12"), handled it with ease. Going to look at a couple places this weekend.

See you brought this thread back up. I ended up buying the cub cadet rzt 54" with the steering wheel. Cut with it for 2 months last year and very happy with it so far.

Going on my third season now with the kubota, and so far it's been great. Very comfortable to ride, and lots of power.
