I have a 2017 SS SE II (the paddle shifter model with the good shocks), I have just over 1000 Miles on it. I trail and bush ride, go in some mud (NOT a MUD Bogger) love climbing hills and here is my take on it. Of all the motor sports I do or have done sledd'n is my favorite (this is from dirt bikes, quads, boats, sports cars, hang gliding, planes, sxs's) until now. Other than you have to wash SXS's, I enjoy blasting this YXZ as much as sled'n. I ride with Kawasaki, Yamaha, Can Am, KTM, Honda and Arctic Cat quads, dirt bikes and sxs's (No Polaris in our Group) and as of yet have had NO ISSUES going where they go. The only mod I have is tires as this thing roasts the stock tires at will and I find the stock Big Horn 2.0 to be S#@!. After you drive and get used of thing, when you get in a gas and go unit, they seem BORING! (Never rode a polaris turbo or Can am X3 did tow a almost brand new polaris highlifter once, didn't know the guy but when he went in the mud and blew all the guts out of the rear end through the side of the case I towed him out and back to the truck, so all I can say about them is they tow heavy) anyways here are the pro and cons of the YXZ:
1 - Not for deep mud bogging or slow rock climbing without a gear reduction.
2 - For average mud and technical riding no problem (although sometimes at a bit faster speed then others) due to the high 1st gear and keeping the revs up.
3 - Climbing hills awesome, love climbing with what ever I'm riding. Jumping is a Blast too with this thing.
4 - Trail riding awesome. Spent a couple days dialing in my suspension and it rides very good when going slow in the rough stuff and I laugh my face off every time we crank it in the rough stuff because it just eats that S@#! up.
5 - Gas milage is awesome because unlike rubber band models that rev higher cruising trails, I can run in 5th gear and its just loafing along. 126 miles and I used 5 gallons of gas (it holds 8 Gallons) and everyone else put in gas to get back to camp. By the way, on the more open logging roads cruising at 60 - 70 Mph is comfortable for this thing and in 5th gear its just in its power band so it still pulls hard when you floor it. (stock Yamaha governs it to 80-82 Mph)
6 - Shifting all day (like I said, mine is the paddle shifter model, NO clutch peddle) this is priceless, this is what makes this thing soooooooooooooo much fun. If your just riding nice it is totally effortless to shift and makes the ride more interesting. If you want a bit of excitement stomp it and bang the gears and you get the biggest S#@! eating grin while doing it. I have guys drive it and before we take off they have said things like "why would you want to have to shift it all the time", 10mins later they are saying holy S#@! that is so much fun to drive (and thats how I feel ALL day no matter what or where we go and do with it.)
7 - Power, don't get hung up on the Hp #s, this thing flat out RIPS, the transmission is more efficient (Fact, not looking for a pissing match) will the new turbos beat it. yea from the vids I've seen on you tube. Here's my question to you, can you ride any of the new sport SxS to there FULL potential? If so and you need more power, look up Alba Racing, Go to a site called SXS Blog and watch what happens when they put a lighter fly wheel, pipe and air box spacer on the YXZ. They run it against a X3 Turbo, the 154 Hp model and the YXZ Beats it in drags from a dead take off as well as a rolling start ( with these mods it still has less hp, about 15 -20 less) Now the X3 does come in a 172Hp model so to run with (beat it) go to Packard Racing and put on their blower (watch their vids, ABSOLUTELY INSANE comes to mind, they pull wheelies like dirt bikes). It just comes down to how much money you have for any of the Sport SxS machines and the BIG Question........... Can you ride it to its FULL Potential. I can't, too old now.
8 - Yamaha Quality, enough said on this subject.
So is this machine for you? maybe not. Can you trail ride out west with this thing? Thats ALL I do. Would I consider another brand? NO WAY as long as they have a Rubber Band Transmissions. Shifting is what make thing HANDS DOWN for me the most fun I have had in dirt PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just my opinion on the YXZ 1000
