I have a 2008 kodiak and was wondering if anybody has done an axle seal on them my right rear is leakin do I take the diff apart or just pull my axle and remove the seal .
Hi B
Simple job
remove the wheel, then remove the two bolts that are holding the rear hub, you will now have the axle and hub loose in your hand, pull the hub and axle hard away from the diff. the axle will come out from the diff, you will notice the oil from the diff will be coming from the area where the axle was, thats ok, if it looks contaminated (milky coloured or dirty ) replace it. The seal is now exposed and you can pull the seal and replace it with a new one. The seal is about $20 dollars at a yamaha dealer. When you replace the seal you can tap it in carefully with a small dowel and hammer or what ever you have to push the seal back in place.
When you put the axle back in you will have to be very firm, and really push hard to re seat the axle back into the diff, there is a lock ring on the end of the axle and that has to be pushed over gear the that holds the axle in place. When it seats right you will not be able to remove the axle unless you really pull hard on it.Reverse the removel proceedure and you are done.
