i have a Arctic Alterrra 500 looking to put a winch on it this year. There seems to be 100's of models and sellers as well as prices How do you pick the right one. ATV dealers or parts seem to be higher in price than anywhere else.
Tell me How to Find the right one?

I have found that a good brand name does seem to make a difference, they seem more comfortable under high load and seem to last longer.
The main consideration is size, try to get one with the highest pulling power that will fit in the location where you want to install it, remember that the roller fairlead normally does not come with it, again they are available in different weight rating, buy the best highest rated one you can get.
Princess Auto is a good place to get one if your just looking for a cheapie for occasional use, otherwise a dealer or Canadian Tire if your looking for a higher end brand name one.
One thing I did was add a good quality roller snatch block to the cable between the roller fairlead and the hook, allows you to quickly double back the line and double your pulling power if you get in a situation where you can hear your winch is struggling, really helps prolong the life of the winch.
Remember to get a tree strap, don't just wrap your cable around the tree.

Always had really good luck with Viper winches. And there customer service was awesome. Had parts sent to me a couple times when i needed. Even with no warranty, no charge.
But with the crap CDN $ I think your best bet would be to pick up a Super winch on sale. $203 for the Terra 3500 right now at PA. Great winch Never had one fail.
