I have a few different devices in my house connected to wifi. My laptop was the orginal item and it connects most of the time without problems.

But other devices don't aways connect, they can find my network, I add my password, but they will think and think and not connect. In order to correct this, I just unplug the wifi modem (whatever it is called), wait a bit and plug it back in. Now that I have iphones, i find my self doing this fairly often, there must be something I can change so i don't have to unplug the wifi all the time.

what brand is the router you keep unplugging and plugging back in? It's likely an issue within that device itself. I had one at the last place we were living at that kept dropping our signals. The other thing too is if there are lots of other wireless networks in range broadcasting on the same channel it can cause interference.

It is about 3 years old, but has been like this since I can remember.

I had a modem go on me after 16 months. Apparently the "cheaper" retail ones produce a lot of heat and that is what burns them out. But sounds like it is the modem.

I always had that problem with my D-Link router. Hard to configure devices and either dropped them or couldn't connect at all. I went out and bought an ASUS router and it was night and day. Had everything up and running in minutes.

There's a section in the wireless settings where you can reserve "channels" for specific devices.

Might want to check and make sure you have the latest firmware for your router...

Basic troubleshooting. First, make sure that any wireless phones (cordless) are in their charging stations.

2. Turn all devices off (power down)

3. Turn one on and see of it has connection issues

4. If it does, use a wifi scanner to see what other stations are broadcasting and note what channel the are using. Make sure your router is using a differ channel by at least 2 numbers.

5. Test the same device again. If not connection issues then add one by one until they are all on and no problems. If still problems with one, likely the router. Try updating the firmware which has already been suggested to ensure everything is current. If that doesn't work replace the router.

It's software. There are many of them, and most are built into the wifi software that you use on your computer.

I have updated the filmware. Everything was working last night. I will see how the next day or two goes.

good question. We live 5 km out of town with about 20 homes on 1/2 acre lots. One day I noticed a car parked on the side of the road for atleast 1/2 hr so I became suspicious as we more or less know all our neighbours. So, I decided to sneak up on him to see what what going on. I came from him passenger side and noticed he had a lap top on viewing a web page so I clued in immediately he was scamming my WIFI. I never did have a pass word on it just because we are in a rural setting. I knocked on the guys window and scared the crap out of him. I told him I knew what he was doing and whats up with that and why not go to town to the local coffee shop. He was so scared he could barely speak. Anyway, after that I went and put a pass word on my router.
