I just can't believe this! I wonder if booze was a factor?. This is 3 dead from sledding in AB alone so far. I'm thinking that avy's will be the least of our worries if this kind of sledding death is upon us. Condolences to the families of the fallen sledders.

The comments at the bottom are why sledders need to make sure that we do everything we can to stay safe, educate the general population and ensure that we have a sport in the future. RIP to the family and friends.

Imagine if this guy was a "lawmaker". For sure he'd right a law that states sleds are illegal.

"Dead is sad..... but if 30 yr old guy is racing like a fool and hit the SUV on the highway you have no one to blame but the fool driving the machine...some people should never drive anything ..leave that up to responsible people"

I believe this year will be as bad if not worse then last, many people didn't learn ANYTHING. Was in Mcbride this weekend, what do I see no packs, shovels on the tunnel, etc. WTF are people thinking? I heard the things on the radio both simply were downright stupid.

Being from Alberta myself I know how people drive on the country back roads out there. Most everyone drives 100kmh plus. So these sledders that are out ditch banging cross those roads pretty frequently. At 100kmh+ a vehicle's speed can be mis-judged and it's on you in a split second. A bit of track spin on the road and you're screwed. The old saying..."some people will never learn". So much truth in those 5 words. Myself included sometimes. I've taken risks that I know I shouldn't have, but been lucky enough to get away with it. This year I've made a promise to myself and my Wife to be smarter about safety and preparedness while in the back country. We've all got way too much to live for and it takes so little to ensure we make it home safely. Be responsible and ride safe everybody. Oh Yeah.......and LEAVE THE BOOZE AT HOME!

Does it really matter that it was on a back road and not the highway? We need to be smart about how and where we ride. There are way too many careless people out there and we can't be leaving it to the other riders/drivers out there to watch out for us...

its sad when so many people die in car to car crashes on the highways, yet anything like sledding, atving and such that the masses dont do gets affected severely when people die or get hurt. avalanches are dangerous but single lane traffic highways kill way more people and they cant BAN highway driving or close highways yet they can close snowmobiling areas.......

Be responsible and ride safe everybody. Oh Yeah.......and LEAVE THE BOOZE AT HOME!

Right on!!

I'm not preaching nor "holyer than thou", but I learned a long time ago that when in the hands of Mother Nature one needs all the common sense that one can muster. Booze clouds the common sense, period!

A drink or two at the end of the day is great and I normally wait until I'm home or in the hotel so I don't have to drive. Yea, I sound like a boring guy to go sledding with but in my own mind, I have a great deal of fun.

With the media on us and I think fair to say, "out to get us for the better of the planet", we need to make smart decisions whether it is with lake ice, avalanche terrain, ditch banging, or riding in closed areas. IMHO, it is hard to make smart decisions when under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Yes, by all means, ride safe and be responsible. Condolences to the family and friends.
