Why risk any oil other than that recommended by the brand? Ski-Doo blend @ under $50/jug, and you have somewhere to go if you have a real engine failure; then it's BRP/Dealer that will try to help out, otherwise you're very likely on your own, and that's much bigger $$'s.
Can't say the Amsoil girls didn't turn a few cranks tho.

All the manufacturers specify an oil that they are comfortable with to protect them from the expensive warranty issue that seriously hurts their bottom line. The price per gallon is not much different between OEM and comparable aftermarket oils so why not use what the OEM is comfortable with.
I have been in the powersports industry for many years and have seen many motors go south due to certain after market oils, so saving a few bucks is not worth the risk.

it sounds like everyone has an opinion on this just like when you ask people what oil they run in there truck. im not even convinced it matters any more. i have lots of friends that run petro can snowmobile injector oil and have put a lot of hard miles on there sleds and had zero problems. i think its around 17 bucks for a gallon. who knows though i dont run amsoil or the brp stuff and no problems either with any of my two stroke equipment.

how do you determine if engine failure is from a certain brand of oil not providing enough protection compared to the recomended brand?

Good question as to how to tell if an oil did not provide enough protection. Not an exact science, but a few indicators we have seen over the years are:
-Clean, dry power valves- indicate a lack of lubrication (they need to look a little carboned up and oily).
- Blued bearings , and dry. (A biggy)
- Others that I can not think of right now,--Any others from repair shops please add info.

could some of these indicators also be from a lack of lubrication like a lean condition or improper oil pump setting?

Last year I switch to amsoil interceptor.....After about 3/4 tank of oil burnt through the sled the results weren't so good..:( That pto side crank bearing piled up good enough that there wasn't much hope in doing a patch up job..:d Warranty covered a new drop in motor with no hassles. The original motor had approx. 500 miles and was bone stock w/ the exception of the cpi can. It may or may not be a result of the oil I was using but for arguments sake when it comes to the type of oil used in my XP I'll keep letting the french-canadian bend me over the barrel for the manufacturers recommended oil..

sorry to tell you there is no oil on the pto side, it rides in a coating of grease, the seal can let go and the oil is flung out. oil was not your problem. thus you got warranty. bombi oil is good, but dealer makes big profit from every jug, Amsoil intercepter oil, at dealer cost is a lot cheaper, and can be purchased at peavey mart and crap tire. as there are now fewer dealers to purchase from, may lead to higher prices?

That's the problem with oils like Amsoil/blue marble/etc. Like MervJennett says, it leaves the power valves "spotless".....You don't want them spotless!!!!!

Oil needs to leave a residue to be effective, if it burns all away....what's left to protect your motor? (like when your crank bearings burn up...:))

Use an oil that leaves a residue and use the right amount!! Too many guys cutting back flow and trying to mess with the oil pump and trying to save $3 a ride. You'll know when you're using too much oil - your plugs will start to foul. Otherwise.... :)

And FYI - the Doo oil is not "junk" - as stated by some folks . I find it hard to believe that BRP offers a warranty while running exclusively on its own "junk". Running on "junk" oil would be just setting themselves up for warranty claims wouldn't it? I'm sure that's what the engineers were aiming for....

Doo oil is the same oil that passes the same tests as all the other brands. It even comes from the same factory, just a different label.

I'm not biased to Doo or Amsoil, I run Shell conventional oil and I run at 32:1.

but mr. modman you run a pussycat, yes a big one, without wheelie bars, impressing the lads on the trail:beer::beer::d:d
