Just wondering who a guy would have to get in touch with to get a couple guys into a course? Have a group of 6 heading to revelstoke march 18-25, it's our longest trip yet, and none of us are certified. With all the avalanches and warnings down there now the first thing that comes to my mind is what would I do if someone gets buried. I spoke with a few guys in my group and we were interested in taking a day to do the course. If anyone could shed some light on it for me that'd be awesome. Thanks

I started with our ol' friend Google:

Hangfire: "As late season is typically when interest in snowmobiling and AST 1 courses dies down (even though it's the best riding of the year in March and April!!), it can be tough to find an AST 1 course to attend. Some of our scheduled dates may not run due to low attendance. If you have a group of 5 or more people we can run an AST 1 course any time in Golden BC. If you would like to set up a spring course in another location, please email us and we will do our best to make it happen.Play Safe!"

Zac's tracs: There is nothing booked for March. Mid Feb is the latest course on her list.

Amber Wood is another one to check out.

Good luck and play safe.

Good to hear that you and your riding group recognize the need for some education :) With a group the size of yours, there's a good chance that any of the companies offering courses will put on a special course just for you guys. Zacs Tracs offers snowmobiler specific courses; Lori and Randy are awesome peeps and are super knowledgeable!! In the meantime, I would suggest taking one of the online courses that are available; especially if you aren't planning on taking the classroom portion of the AST1 beforehand...

Yeah it's funny how you hear some guys think they won't ever need it or that they will know what to do when in reality they have no knowledge at all.... I really started to think about the safety part of snowmobiling and wouldnt hurt to gain some knowledge, obviously it could happen to anyone. How long does these courses usually take on average? Should I be prepared to dedicate a full day of not riding? Are they costly? I'd like to say that we all would be able to take the course but I don't think that's going to be possible. Some of my group are only going to be there a couple days and probably would want to ride. Me and my cousin plan on being there for 7 days, and we're the two that's regulars in our group, usually if we don't go, no one does haha. So if just the two of us could get the course it would be ok for now. I'll inform the rest of them about the online part tho.. Maybe I could have done a google search first haha.

The Field session is a full day and the classroom is a full day as well; and as Ferniesnow mentioned, cost for the course usually ranges between $300 -$400...pretty inexpensive when you consider what you're wagering if you don't have it...ie: your life :)

Check with Zacs or Hangfire or any of the other outfits and see what they can do for you...they are generally super accommodating, especially at the 'end of the season'...I'm confident you will be able to set something up for your whole group!! You may want to even consider riding in Golden for a day as that may make it easier to set up a private course. After all if only 2 out the group have any actual training...you're not that much further ahead than you were to begin with...what happens if you are the two that get buried and your untrained/uneducated buddies are responsible for rescuing you? Things to think about...

Again...I definitely commend you for looking into this and taking some initiative...it is very nice to see peeps recognizing the need for education :)

Just saw this on FB: Soul Rides AST 1

Just pulled this off a local Revy site,

Avalanche Skills Training level 1 course. I am looking for a minum of 5 people intrested in doing thier AST 1 for some time in the last 2 weeks in March. We will be acessing the back country in the mini cat in the picture. We also have a mobile class room so that if the weather is good we can go out in the feild and come back to the class as we see fit. the class is a bit more pricy then most but it will also be a one off experiance. if intrested contact me as I will be working on organising the dates that work for every one.
jeremy@soulrides.ca

hope this helps, give Jeremy a call, also one heck of a sledder! Support sledders who teach the AST

Zacs posted that they have two courses left one in Fernie March 23-25 and Wainwright (I think) early April.
