Weigh your truck with a full tank or gas and just you in it. Then check the GVW and subtract your scale weight. You'll find that your good for hauling grocceries from IGA and suds from the Beer Box and that's it. The other concern is your braking power. Big difference from a 2500 to a 1500. You over load yourself and your stopping distance has now increased considerably. I don't know what kind of a driver you are but those two combinations can get ya in a world of hurt in a hurry :nono:

They go by the sticker on the door for what you are legal to haul not your paper work. If you look overloaded they will get you for sure as they are always roaming around. you want to be legal as that is a crappy way to start your sled trip with a ticket and then they can make you get legal before moving on.

That's the worst part...."they can make you get legal before moving on"!! Who are you going to phone to come and help because you sure as ---- aren't going to leave the sleds behind while you go unload your truck and come back for some more stuff.

As mentioned above, weigh it and as bbtoys says, "It's the sticker on the door, the GVW."

The worst place is in the area west of Jasper as they have a real hate for our eastern buddies. Not too bad in the SE but still a concern.

You have to have your truck registered for the weight that you are hauling. Legal and safe are two different things in B.C. You can register your half ton to pull a 35 foot travel trailer that has four slides. It is all about what you have on the registration. Weigh your unit and then go to registries and up your GVW. You can then haul your sleds legally. Safety is another issue.

The only reason for a licenced weight on your registration is for commercial use only....not personal. The CVSE and DOT are there to target that sector. But if you look like a hazard on the road they will stop you.

Do the RC's work with the DOT in regards to pulling over trucks for overweight conditions etc? I just came back from Vale last weekend with my half ton with a deck and one sled on it while pulling a two place trailer with one sled on it, and two of us in the cab, passed a bunch of RC's and no issue. Their was even a rc waiting down the highway from the scales at tete j, and he didn't even blink an eye even though I was doing about 95 past him which is a 70 zone, whoops:nono:

All branches of law enforcement will and do work together now and again. When there are blitzes at a DOT scale you can have everyone from city bylaw to fish and game. It will also depend on what their focus is when it comes to infractions. I had a co-worker get stopped by the county cop by Sexsmith at 1am. They had a few choice words and he was then escorted to the DOT scale in GP to have his weight checked and the county cop had called for assistance. There was a DOT officer present to help the county cop. This was on a commercial vehicle with 46,500 GVW .

u cant just go and up ur GVW and haul more hahaha then that would solve everyones prob. every vehicle has its weight rating and if u want to be legal u have to stick to that. if u want to be sneaky (like sum ppl including me once in awhile) then its all up to u. but make sure u dont over do it and know how ur unit will handle. but be careful for gettn stopped. of all the times we went to the mountains we've done the 2 sleds on a deck on a half ton, 3 on a 2place etc and never been stopped yet. but not everyone gets away as lucky.

There is no real policing the private sector in this matter. It boils down to being in the wrong place at the wrong time if you get stopped and fined. If the government wanted to clamp down on this area like the commercial sector, the fallout would be unprecident.

Yep, no chance in ---- that is happening. I've got a Dodge 3500 SRW and I am worried about a deck and pulling a 2 place open for weight. I will be right at my limit, just with the deck, full of fuel my truck weights 9200lbs with a 40G slip tank, leaves only about 2400lbs. And "real weights" your looking at i'd say are 650lbs per sled, and add 900lbs for 3 other guys and their gear. Then another 200lbs of tounge weight.

DOT isn't stupid they know what stuff weights and know what kind of truck you got VERY quickly. In the past few years there have been a lot of guys with 1/2 tons and a deck with 2 sleds. Almost if not all must be overweight, especially the guys with yamahas on them.

your gvcw is the deciding factor i think when you are pulling. At the sled show i even went to the highways booth and asked alot of questions about weights and penelties. if i get stopped i will put up quite the fight as this seems to be a real issue. maybe i'll even weigh in next time and go in and try to get an official memo. someone on this site must be a dot....imo

Why try to squeak by and ruin a great trip? Do it right. DOT here is not very forgiving and they don't babysit your property if you have to park it roadside.

i am willing to bet the RCs are not too worried about the weights my guess is when they pick on sledders it is because of boozing, speeding, or being reckless on the road. i have a drw 1 tonne so im pretty lucky when im pulling but if some jacked up rig rocket that looks sacked out with a 4 place they just use ther weight issue to get inside the truck to collect bottles

Remember they have portable roadside scales.
They pull out the scale and have you drive over them.
No special location needed.

The RC's aren't picking on sledders, we do it to ourselves, get that straight. You can tell when the sledders are on the road, besides the fact that they are hauling sleds. This is a fact, I travel the icefields parkway 2-3 times a month all year, and I never see beer cans on the highway during the summer but as soon as the snow flies you see them litterred up and down it. Say what you want, but your only kidding yourself if you think different.
As for DOT in BC, I've been put on the scales at TJ , barely squeaked by in a 1 ton Chev duallie, deck, 2 sleds ( doo/polaris) and we only had 200 kgs to spare. At the same time, we watched some other fellas unload their trailer and truck as the DOT watched and wrote up the ticket. Have seen it many times, summer time have seen 1/2 tons towing 5 th wheels from AB and seen them unhooking and leaving their trailers at the scales. Not everyone gets nailed, maybe it's a lucky day for you, but like some one else said why take the chance and possibly ruin a good trip with your own stupidity.

We just happened to stop at the eastbound scale west of Calgary on Sat coming back from Quartz,04 dodge 2500 diesel, 3 guys, gear, 1/2 tank fuel, steel deck with a Rev X and a XP 1/2 full tanks, on the deck, 2 place Triton with 1 Xp and we had 220KG to spare on rear axle so full of fuel and sleds full on the way out we would have been very close to Max.

What's the Tare weight of your truck and trailer?
A rear axle on a dually is only rated for 9350 lbs (4242kgs) and the front is 5200 lbs (2359 kgs).
Depending on the type of trailer you have will determine its legal weight per axle.

Legal axle weights (truck and trailer) - Tare axle weights (truck and trailer)= GVRW

if you only have 60 lbs on the tongue i think i may report you myself, as you are definitely to light on the tongue and will end up in the ditch or kill someone, you should be around 10% of trailer load.

this sounds dangerous to every one on road.
