Rhinos gps/2way radio. Work awesome. Not cheap. But look into it.. My whole sledding group uses them. And you can see where they are as well on your gps.

I use a Garmin GPSMap 60CSX. It has a very sensitive receiver so never loses satellite reception even in the trees. Load in a TopoMap and you can't beat it.

I like my rino but I have had 2 bad ones right out of the box. I have a 530 and a 120 and the second 530 is going back again and the 120 the back lights on the screen have now stopped working. I think it is just my luck. but the radios keep working lol.

Another vote for the Rhino series. I use mine on every trip both quading and sledding. It should also be noted that the radio used by the Rhino can talk to any GMRS Public Band Radio, they just don't update locations.

It will work with these fine:

I actually have a couple of these so that guys in our group that don't have Rhinos can still communicate.

All electronics should be kept away from Beacons. I keep mine in a an handlebar bag on my sled or in my backpack

Do cell phones affect the Tracker?
Yes, but only if the items are extremely close to each other. Do not place cellular phones, communication radios, or any other electronic equipment within 6 inches (roughly 15 cm) of the Tracker DTS while performing a transceiver search. In receive mode, irregular readings and decreased range can be caused by these and other sources of electrical interference, such as power lines, electrical storms, and electrical generating equipment. In transmit mode, keep the Tracker DTS at least 1 inch (roughly 2 cm) from other electronic equipment

Another one....two years ago my 530 was acting up and I took it into GPS Central and they gave it a "computer up-date" in the store. Didn't help, so they gave me the 1-800 for Garmin. I talked to them and said they had some problems send it in. It was maybe 2.5 years old and they fixed it on warranty. They sent it back, no charge.

This year it is working intermittently again. Time to doo it all over again. Maybe with the price of the dollar, it is time to go to Kalispell and buy one of the big wattage ones!!

Yes, the radios work with the Cobras, Motorolas, whatever! Put them on the same channel and you're good to go. Isn't all the technolgy that we have a pain in the *ss.....

Ok, now your talking! the big wattage ones!. It is my understanding that due to FFC regs in Canada the public are not allowed to use these types of radios with 3 watts or more. On Garmins site it shows the rhino 530 with 5 watts and I doubt that the ones we buy up here are truly 5 watts.

Talking with a buddy last night we were wondering how long batteries would last if you did any kind of transmitting with the 5 watt rhino? How long do batteries last in the rhinos that people here are using?

You are correct about the Wattage restrictions in Canada (Damn CRTC:rant:), however I have bought 2-5W Rhinos from Maptown in Calgary (Actually returned a defective one for a good one). I'm not sure if they got an incorrect shipment or they always sell the 5W ones. It would definitely be worth it to cross the border to pick up the 5W model.

I've never had any issues with battery life. I keep the backlight off while it's light out and never have any problems making a full day. It's possible that people that use their radios more than I do might have a different experience.

I use the rechargeable Li ion, don't doo a whole lot of talking, mostly track mode, and a few way points here and there and will come back after the day with about 76% remaining. Never have had a problem with battery. It is in a heated riser bag with the end of the antenna sticking out. But because of the lack of radio communication, I'm a poor one to talk about battery use.

I have a couple 5 watt Midland GMRS that I picked up state side and they have awesome range on the trail but they eat AA batteries like crazy. They do come with a rechargeable battery pack that does last a lot longer, however if they are not kept warm there is no way they will last a day.

I like the Idea of the rhino but the last thing I want is for the thing to die on me when I need it as a GPS because it takes a ton of power to radio a message to the rest of the crew saying I think we are lost.

I found the power cord to cig lighter on ebay for $10, switches back and forth between power and batteries as needed. Mounted with ram mounts on both sled and teryx.

Just bought 2) Rino's 530Hcx. Got them out of the U.S. In GMRS they run up to 5 watts and Canadian units run at only 2 watts max. Makes a huge difference over greater distance.
Not supposed to have this much wattage in Canada at this time. You will be able to get the 5 watt unit in Canada in 2014.
There is lots to learn. Spend time playing as they work very good.
Especially the 5 watt unit.
