What was THE sled to have when you started mountain riding?

A lot of us had 1977 TX-440's back in the days we rode clemina in 78 and on. Took all day to break off the logging roads and then when we got to the meadows, all day to get around and back to the logging road, no real trails back then. Couple guys had TXL's and then the TXL Indy and they were not much better. We cut the tunnels, dropped the skids, removed the hoods and anything we could to help. We learned how to dig I'll tell ya that and how to get unstuck. When the 79 SS440 and SRV's from yamaha came out, they were about the best besides the Polaris. Ski-doo was nothing more than a lake racer with the blizzards although I had an 81 Blizzard 5500 fan that went good after we chopped the tunnel, etc
All I could find is this picture above of my brand new 1981 doo 5500 heading up the trail at Allen creek

My first 'mountain' trip was into Windy Ridge near Canmore in 1986 on a '85 Skidoo Formula SP. Track 121X 0.75 with a 462cc engine with single carb. We spent hours trying to get out of the bowl after we got in too far down.

when i got into mountain riding.......hummm 5 years ago??? think the highmarker at the time when setting highmarks were still cool in the group was a 162 m1000 with some bolt ons, and only cool if you had an aftermarket seat.....

My first "mountain sled" was a 1976 Ski Doo Everest. Those things with the long track were huge compared to the other sleds of the time.

'96 670 formula ss. With a 136" 1.75 track. It was a fun machine road it for four years without any issues but on her final ride she was towed out of the hills and parted out.

Bought a 97 Summit brand new, went to CNP just before xmas 96. And thought this is the bomb!!!! The next year upgraded the 1.5 to a 2" Rode Vale and Mcbride, almost every 2nd weekend. Then a 2000 700 RMK, kicked out the 136 to a 151 and Bobs your uncle :D

Uncle Bob.....98 600 RMK with pipes etc was awsome sled also

Thought I had the world by the tail with my 96 Summit 670. What a difference from the big boxy looking 94-95 Summits. Boy things have changed.....

86 formula plus tunnel cut and the next year bolt on paddles,re-jet at least 2 times per day just to run

Due to lack of better judgement mine was a 2000 powder special 700....with a 3" riser so I wasn't slumped over as bad.

I remember one trip, early to mid 90's, we're riding Quartz. It's pretty much a stuck-fest with everybody doing what they can on their 136" 'paddle' tracks and what not. Along comes Rob Blair and he's got a 156" tack and some kind of PSI engine I think. The thing looked totally outrageous with that track. NOBODY had a track that long, I don't think it had even been conceived of but there he was, sitting down, riding circles around everyone. It was years before you saw anyone else with anything that long.

I kind of miss the days when the mountains were 'bigger'.

Lived in Elkford in 1994 and rode an 87 Yammy Exciter 570 with bolt on paddles to head up to the burning coal seam at night for a beer! The sled to have was a 670 summit or indy storm sks

Conversation with a buddy about how technology changed leads me to wonder.

For me it was the 98 700 RMK. You were UNSTOPPABLE with one of of these wedges. Some people *cough LHF) apparently still are....

Makes me wonder what my kids will say about my sleds in 15, 20, 30 years...

This could be interesting! Let's hear it guys!

My Wedge is still UNSTOPPABLE.
