Polaris rides way better in the rough stuff too. Also the Polaris big block 600 engine is pretty much bullet proof.

I would go wth the 583 withiout hesitation! Bullet proof! Not to add controversey but the 583's I've had have been very easy to start, and I don't know if I am correct but would the 583 summit have the alltitude compensator and adjustable clutch??? (my 97 670 summit does) This in my opinion is a great bonus over changing jets. (especially on those triples)
Just my opinion

I had a 583 and got rid of it cause it was always a problem to start, cold weather, warm weather, always. If the Poo is reliable keep it and do some upgrades.

Agreed. See if the Summit comes with the stock exhaust as well. Most starting issues with these sleds were and are due to people not knowing how to use the primer correctly.

I have owned a 97 Forn Z 583, 98 summit 500 and a 99 RMK 700. Although these aren't the exact sleds you comparing engines and body styles are reasonably similar. I would say that the 583SKIDOO and the 600POLARIS are equally reliable engines, both have good power, both are easy to work on. Both are good sleds. The RMK chassis seems to feel lighter when riding. I wouldn't say that one has a huge advantage over the other. The primer on the doos work fine for cold start right down to -35 or colder.

What I would worry about is: why does he want to trade you? Keep your sled, at least you know what you have. Unless you think your sled is POS and then ditch it.
