I usually wear a longsleeve base layer with merino wool and any old hoodie, since it's usually coming off after the trail ride up.

But I'd rather not have a sweater with a hood due to trees and strangulation.

So.....any recommendations on a warm mid layer, that a guy could still wear in the trees if need be on a colder day?

Cheers

Lots of them out there. All polyester and no hood. Mark's, Sport Chek, Cabella's, any of the ski shops. I have a couple from Mark's and a couple of Columbia. Some are lighter/heavier than others depending on the temperature.

I wear 200 weight ice breaker merino tops and bottoms. If it's really cold I wear a stanfields wool shirt underneath on the trail. I wear an avy vest so once riding in nearly any weather I drop the heavy wool shirt and just have the base layer on since I'm warm enough.

Cool-max long sleeve shirt and pants (wicking), T-max long sleeve shirt and pants (insulate), Valdez coat and pants. extra long sleeve insulate in the pack but rarely use it, thinking of changing that out to a down fill for emergencies.

merino wool turtle neck 1/4 zip (mid or heavy weight) and a merino wool mid layer (nylon shell with merino wool panels on the inside). both products from icebreaker. I've tried many combos and this stuff will not be beat. You will be warm (not cozy warm like a down product), you will not be gross sweaty and i don't know how it does it but it does not smell with sweat.

Cabela's base layer, or merino wool base layer under my Alpha jacket and that's it. However I also carry a klim mid layer jacket in my tunnel bag in case it gets chilly, but yet to need it. Klim or Motorfist pants under the bibs.

Same, except my bottoms are 250 and carry a 250 weight mid layer in my tunnel bag in cooler days but rarely use it.

Under Armor thermal base layer top and bottom, sweat pants, chest protector, and Motorfist Recon bibs & jacket. If its a really cold day I'll throw on a second long sleeve shirt.

Ditto on the Merino Wool or Smartwool. Anything polyestor, underarmour, or anything with coolmax and I smell like an old hockey bag in 20 minutes. Can ride with smart wool as a base layer for 3 days and no smell. Amazing product, wicks well, very warm and no smell.

I use Smartwool socks, long underwear, shirt base layer, then a shell. Cold days i'll ad a mid layer of Klim pants and jacket.

I wear a klim coat and bibs. And the only thing I wear under that is under armour long underwear and a under armour shirt. That’s it. I rode two weekends last year in at kakwa that we’re -25. No sweat and held great heat all weekend. That’s how I’m gonna roll this year.

Icebreaker Merino wool long sleeve shirt and Johns (200 zone). This stuff really is the best IMO. The same stuff I sled up the trail with I also hit the trees. I just bring an extra long sleeve shirt if needed (250 zone). I've used the same shirt/johns for sledding, hiking, skiing, late season kayaking, climbed Kili... you name it. Exceptional product.

I love anything merino wool, ice breakers are great. One thing to watch for is products labeled as merino wool that isn’t 100% wool. Some companies with say made with wool, but they mean only with enough to put it on the label.
