Try a search on your question and you should come up with a lot of good answers....

You need the following minimum:

Beacon, Shovel, Saw, Probe.

Do a search on the items above and buy the best you can afford.
Do not ride in Avalanche risk areas with anyone who does not have the above items.

I strongly recommend an Avalanche Air Bag (such as ABS), Avalanche Safety Training, GPS and a SPOT or Sat Phone. (I carry all these items)

Then you need to practice with the above equipment and ensure your riding friends do as well.

What this guy said!

Last year was my first year in the mountains i rented equiptment and didnt take a Avalanche course or carry the right equiptment.

Which i regret, however i was lucky and nothing happened.

This year me and my dad will be taking the AST 1 course have our own beacons, probes, shovels, saw, Avypack, and More knowledge and understanding of how to use the equiptment.

ill be going for my first time with my uncle. hes been sledding for years so i should be able to get the right no how. but ya im not going to the mountains without the gear for it thats for sure. to bad there is no way i can afford a avy pack like the ABS. dont have a grand to spare. things are expensive. we'll see if i can find a used one before season starts.

so just to clear up from what i have searched what is the purpose of the probe. just for search in cause of avalanche happends?

You dont need and avy pack for your first year, yes their nice and could save your life but the most important piece of gear is knowledge and common sense. The beacon and knowing how to use it is key, take the ast1 course and practice, practice. If you know how to read the conditions and know where and where not to go with difference weather conditions then you shouldn't need and avy pack.

The probe is for locating someone after they have been buried, the key is practicing with that as well. Its also nice to check snowpack depth.

Ride smart and ride safe!!:headbanger:

There are alot of shops that rent peeps, probes and shovels also. Our shop in mcbride rents them as some people rent if they are only going to come to the mtn's once or twice a year.

Probe is for the final, or pinpoint search. Beacon gets you there.

I would highly recomend you hit Welcome to avalanche.ca and start reading. They have a training section on there that will make you more aware of the terms and how things work. Its a good start.

$350 for a pieps beacon, is that including delivery? I think I paid $400 for it to be bussed to Red Deer last year.

I somewhat regret buying my ABS pack, as i'm just getting into the mountain scene I won't be "Showtiming" till I get some experience/knowledge under my belt. If you are going to get an abs pack get the 30L instead of the 15L.
