Lots of bad assumptions in every study, so always take it with a grain of salt. They compared to a Diesel engine.
Here's a debunking article from a green pusher so take this one with a grain of salt too...: https://cleantechnica.com/page/3/

Yeah that's my point, can't take those studies seriously because they
are clearly biased.

The internal combustion engine is king as far as range goes (with the possible exception of a one ton gas dually I used to own). Commuting to the office 30 KMs each way from heated garage to heated garage means there are several different cars that would work for me right now. Probably pick one up in the next few years. All vehicles require a lot of energy to construct gas or electric. Main advantage to electric IMO is that they produce no emissions at the tailpipe so air quality should improve in cities.

The problem with any driven system is it takes power to make power.

Hybrid, Electric, fusion lol, they haven't really changed drastically and until they find a better way or storing the energy they require, it won't drastically improve. Everyone thinks Solar is the answer. While solar is a great renewable resource solar panels are only so efficient. The cost per watt of manufacturing has gone down but the efficiency has not gone up for the most part. The further you go from the equator the less peak energy the sun allows for solar energy. Then what do you do with solar you can't store? Its gone until the next time. I love solar, but it likely won't ever be the bulk of our supplied energy.
Wind, solar and hydro needs to be able to store the energy. Hydro is the only one that really stands a chance of running 24/7 because you can damn rivers and always have supply. You can't always have wind and sunshine.

Another item the Greenies plead ignorance to is what a Lithium mine actually looks like. Its okay for them to mine massive holes into the Earth for rare metals and decimating entire landscapes in the process but the Oil Sands are the bad guys. Also the recycling costs to reuse Lithium batteries costs more than manufacturing new, so it doesn't make sense to recycle them. Then what? Sink them in the bottom of the Ocean? Eventually the lithium deposits that are easy to get to will become harder and more costly. But don't expect to see it in your lifetime.

Regardless, electric power still mostly comes from non renewable resources. You can't get away from that. So while the green toting granola crunchers may feel good about driving an electric car, they are still contributing to greenhouse gases, they just don't see that in their jaded view of reality.

And who wants to wait to drive anywhere? Get home from a short trip and need to run out and do something else, nope, have to wait for the car to charge.

With a single onboard charger plugged into a standard 110-volt outlet, Tesla says you will get 5 miles of range for every hour of charging. From zero to 300 miles would take about 52 hours at that rate. With a single charger connected to a 240-volt outlet, which Tesla recommends, the pace speeds up to 31 miles of range for each hour of charging, and a full 300-mile charge takes less than 9.5 hours.

Wow that sounds like fun. So with a range of 200-300 miles it would take you like 5 days to do a 1000 mile trip so you can stop and charge.

Luckily until 2021 I believe the $ Kwh price is fixed in Alberta. What until that freeze comes off and they triple the energy rates. :)

looks like a girly ride. guess they will be able to plug in there hairdryers and pocket rockets on the way to work, in the fabuous battery operated car brings new meaning to the term "joy ride".

Electric cars are the way of the future whether we like it or not. Quite frankly its the only viable option we have for individual means of transport without fossil fuels. So many other options have been researched for decades that have yet to produce marketable results such as fuels cells, and hydrogen cars.

Electric cars would actually work quite well in a world of renewable energy sources such as wind or solar, because anytime the wind or sun shines and power supply goes up prices would go down and you could charge your car taking advantage of the excess power and low prices.

One nice thing about electric is the torque they put out. Can't beat the torque of an electric motor. But in Canada I can't see them catching on any time to soon. Maybe as summer rides but not winter. Heating them and the cold will bring the run time way down. And lots of us drive a long ways to work each day.

Volvo doesn't even have an electric car...
Hybrids is what they know, tossed in electric in their press release for coverage.

I believe our power is generated from burning coal for now. But I believe they are required to convert to natural gas.

They batteries are built using oil related products and when they are worn out they are hazard hazardous left over waste to dispose of.

But good for your if electric vehicles make you feel good.
