Vin Check?

Just as the title says, where does everyone get a VIN check on an ATV or Sled before they buy to ensure it isn't stolen? Registries said they can only check for a lien but its only good for Alberta, and the RCMP station look at you like your nuts and say they can't do it either. If this is the case no wonder there are so many atv's and sleds getting stolen, if there is no way to check if it's hot or not.

I am pretty sure your insurance company can check everything for you.

Talked to a different insurance company today (I spend at least half an hour on hold to talk to mine) and they said they couldn't look it up either, nor did they care, if it could be registered is was good with them, and registries said if you had a bill of sale it was good with them, they wouldn't look to see if it was stolen. Maybe I just got the people that didn't care today or something, but no wonder everyone has their stuff stolen if it is really that easy to get rid of.

If you're an AMA member, give them a call and have them do a VIR. It's only $22, and it shows any liens that are outstanding on the vehicle, plus it lets you know the current status, whether it's active, rebuilt, etc. It also tells you where and when the vehicle has been registered. Good piece of mind when you're buying a used machine off somebody you don't know.

ABMax... So you can write your own bill of sale & go register a unit no matter what?? And if your ever stopped & its all registered in your name what can the cops do?? How about if someone wrote it off stolen on there insurance & you end up with it? Go to insure & register is all good. Have an accident your self & go to claim it?? Would you get nailed then & loose out??

There has to be a way to track units better then this.

If it's stolen and has a police statement it should be in CPIC and you can check that on your phone right there at the unit or have them give you the s number over thenphone and check it before you drive there. If it don't come up then the police should never care when you get stopped

This is the way I've been told to check as well, the problem is it puts the liability on the purchaser to research this, so it would be real easy for thieves to get rid of a hot item to an unsuspecting purchaser and be long gone before they know the wiser.

Yes, so if your insurance company runs the VIN then they would catch it, if not then we are back to the same issue.

I'm pretty sure insurance companies would check the vins otherwise they would be liable for insuring stolen property??
