Avidemux 2.5.4 gets goods ratings at cnet, and its free.

Works well...IMHO.
Like most video editing software expect some initial confusion.
After you get your vid all cropped up with Avidemux you can then add music/affects with your Windows Movie Maker, works well...IMHO and also free.

Windows Movie Maker for XP Windows XP: Movie Maker 2.1 Download

Windows Movie Maker for Windows 7 Windows Live Movie Maker 2011
During the install process of Windows Live Movie Maker you may be prompted to install other Windows Live components, don't bother...IMHO.

Good luck with your videos reaper020

I use Adobe Premier Elements 8. It is a little pricey but I have used it for years and really like it. Have played around with the windows one that comes on the laptop or desktop but they don't do what Adobe does.

I was using Adobe Premier Elements 8 and it works fairly well. Problem is it doesn't work well with the new 64 bit Windows 7 desktop I got this fall. Even in the 32 bit XP emulation. It's very unstable to the point my files get corrupt and I cant open them any more. I tried out the trial version of PowerDirector 9 and it seems to be a good program. It looks like the only 64 bit editor package that doesn't cost $1K or more. I think I may buy it.
