What is the difference between the two? What does it mean?

The VES (Veriable Exhaust System) monitors exhaust pressure in the cylinder via a diaphram/spring. The regulated pressures, unlike a non-VES motor, result in better/cleaner burns in the cylinder creating added HP. The newer HO engines then came out with vaccum controlled VES and now electronic assisted VES. Ski-Doo originally came out with this type system in the early 90's (Mach Z and MX Z).

the exhaust port on the VES system is bigger, there is a sliding piece that makes it the same size as the non-ves when at lower rpm. As rpms get towards peak the sliding piece goes up and opens the full port size. The smaller port increases the exhaust velocity which helps to build low end torque, the bigger port for top end increases peak HP. The linear way that it works helps to make a broad torque curve, as it opens gradually.

I have been told by more than a few reputible engine builders that a NON VES 800 polaris, IF properly ported will make the same hp #s as a VES 800 thats been ported, and be way more dependable. Mostly based on the cooling characteristics of the non vs ves

Variable exhaust systems came out in the 1950s... or earlier. Suzuki used variable exhaust timing on a street bike cira 1957; may have been used before then.

That's what my engine looks like in the '99. Wasn't sure if the used pipes I bought would work.

what did you buy? off of what? if they ore it is off a ves, they will fiy, with very little modification. you may need to change the attach point angle......easy if you got the tools
