[h=1]Valemount ski resort proceeding[/h]
By admin, on November 19th, 2014
The proposed Valemount ski resort took a major step forward with the closing of investment towards 30,000 acres of resort land and 7000 vertical feet of skiing, according to people close to the project. Hunter Milborne, nationally recognized as the “Dean of Condos” by Canadian Business Magazine, and Robert Powadiuk, a Toronto-based commercial real estate developer and longtime skier credited with the audacious notion of turning Mount Mackenzie into a mega-resort some 20 years earlier, are the two rumoured to have closed on the property.
A view of Mt. Robson from the area around Mount Pierre Elliot Trudeau and Mount Arthur Meighen west of Valemount

When built, Valemount’s resort will feature the only ski in/ski out airport in North America. The ski and sightseeing resort would feature the world’s largest vertical drop, year-round skiing, high-alpine glaciers and sightseeing that includes Mt. Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.
Facilities for year-round skiing on glaciers and high-alpine glacier sightseeing do not currently exist in North America, although they are common in the European Alps, the proposal says.
The study area outlined in the company’s 2012 Formal Proposal covers roughly 41,000 acres. The controlled recreation area would be about half that size, or 20,000 acres. The ski run terrain would be 2,500 acres (Whistler-Blackcomb is approx. 8,000 acres).
According to an earlier proposal, the initial 2,000-bed resort base would be situated on a bench just below the mountains via the Westridge Family Loop road, west of Valemount.
Among the resort’s potential features are a public swimming pool and spa; snowshoeing and cross-country ski trails; mountaineering, backcountry touring, and climbing; tree-top adventures and ziplines; snow tubing; mountain bike trails; and mountain-top dining. The cost of the full project was estimated to be $800 Million.
The Valemount Ski Society is working to ensure the needs and values of residents are considered in the master plan process. The society, which has around 500 members, was set up to promote a high-quality alpine destination. Project details can be found on the society’s website, .
A copy of the 192-page Formal Proposal from September 2012 lays out more detailed plans for the year-round ski and sightseeing resort that would be the first of its kind in North America.

You should start getting those dollars and I will build it for you. It looks like I am going to be looking for work so that would be a good job. We will use all JD and brp products to build.

Jumbo glacier resort poured concrete footings last fall.... doesnt mean they will be moving ahead.
Another ski resort to employ 500 aussies at 11 bucks and hr and drive up real estate so locals cant afford to live there. Just what BC needs.

They'd probably hire locals too, if they would work for 11 bucks an hour and didn't have this sense of entitlement that this generation has now.

There lies the problem, adults can't get a decent paying job and can't afford housing so they will move. Leaves no kids to work in restaurants, pump gas..... so towns/resorts bring in imports.

When Valemount still had industry ( logging, sawmill) it was a great place. I still have family living there , and spent many a summer there. Outdoors life is awesome , but with no work, most of the residents had to move away. Some of my younger nieces and nephews, worked as housekeeping staff, cooks, servers etc. It was just a way to make a few bucks to get out. Some of the locals spent most of their lives on welfare. Alcoholism was also a problem with nothing to do but drink.
PS
Best bush parties ever !! Lol

It's a beautiful area, and there's almost no industry, so this is better than nothing. From a project of this magnitude springs jobs beyond just minimum wage service industry jobs. Millwrights and Welders, Electricians and Heavy Duty Mechanics are all needed to keep lift and grooming equipment running. Electricians, Plumbers and Steam Engineers are needed to run the buildings. Opportunities for entrepreneurs to offer other products and services to the visitors will evolve.

If if this town is truly hungry, they'll embrace it. If they're not, they'll oppose it.
