Wow! This would be a game changer for the town of Valemount. I don't know if I like it or not...

This has been in the works for a while. Would be the only glacier/year round ski resort in North America which makes it unique and therefore more likely to succeed than would a conventional winter ski resort. Has strong support from government, indigenous community and locals and like everything else will happen if enough investment can be attracted and that in my mind is the big if. Locals have seen so many proposals for resort development in Valemount area over the years that have never come to fruition that they take a wait and see attitude and that is likely part of the reason you do not hear a lot about it. If Kinder Morgan can obtain approval to twin their pipeline from Rearguard Falls to Burnaby and the people behind the Glacier Destination Resort can obtain adequate funding Valemount could become a happening little place over the next few years. Real estate prices are still very reasonable so if you are a sledder and were considering purchasing property in Valemount now might not be a bad time to buy..

Remember Rachel said if we clean up our act then other provinces and countries will welcome our pipelines and our oil and gas with open arms. She promptly cleaned up our act, or so she thinks, by capping oil sands emissions and introducing a carbon tax among other things and shortly after she did Obama turned down Keystone XL and now the Government of BC has just put a thumbs down on the TransMountain line twinning that would have pumped $34 million into the Valemount area economy. So much for her theory. Government of BC supported the twinning from the Alberta BC border to Rearguard Falls through Mount Robson Provincial Park only a few years ago when Alberta, at least according to Rachel, did not have our s**t together and now that we apparently have our s**t together BC do not support the pipeline. Go figure. Is it possible Rachel is feeding Albertans a line of BS. I find that hard to believe as she seems to be a nice lady whom only has the interests of Albertans at heart.

Has anybody been to the proposed site? What's the terrain like? The plan looks ambitious to say the least.

Nothing being built yet right?

Parts of the westerly end of the upper Westridge sledding area are within the resort so would lose some terrain there. Between sledding and a helicopter ride have seen most of the area. Terrain is very diverse from open easier runs on the upper parts of the glaciers to steep open runs on face of glacier and a bit of everything through the trees below the alpine. Plan is a gondola directly from the existing airport to the top of Mount Trudeau with a stop along the way at the alpine village to be developed in existing cut blocks below the treeline. Over time a number of smaller lifts would be constructed that could be accessed from runs off the gondola and which would spread out the ski terrain across more faces. Community forest is logging in that area now so have already cleared some trees from the proposed alpine village to the airport and taken the timber off of a number of proposed ski runs below the alpine.
