The emergency plumbing services in Calgary has updated their blog with an article - http://www.imagineplumbing.ca/about-us/blog/uv-water-treatment/uv-water-treatments-work/ - that explains the functioning of UV Water treatment that can help us in destroying 99.9% of harmful pathogen organisms like bacteria to fungi to molds, spores and viruses. There are different other methods that can be used for destroying pathogens, but UV water treatments are leading the choice due to the fact that they are safe, free of chemical and environmentally friendly. They do not affect the taste or smell of water and are quick, easy to install and economical. They don’t cause any damage to plumbing systems or septic tanks.

True but UV has drawbacks. It is not accepted in the codes as a complete sterilization method that eliminates the use of chlorine. This is due to the fact that UV is good for point of use only as it does not carry any sterilization properties downstream. Bacteria can flare up right after UV but not right after chlorine injection. UV light can be monitored but there is no residual chemical to measure and record like chlorine. When using chlorine, free available halogen can be measured and recorded and therefore targets and specifications have been established to be maintain. It is a known fact that most pathogens cannot survive when the free halogen is present and government agencies rely on this.
UV is also prone to fouling of the quartz tube when the feed water is high in solids or hardness. Hard water can plate out on the tube and block the light.
UV is a great addition to chlorine and can greatly reduce the amount of chemical used but you may not count on UV alone.
