Going to look at a used 09 xp X 163 in the next couple of days. Not very familiar with the xp at all, is there anything in particular I should be looking for. Sled has 2000km on it.

Thanks

stand at the front of the sled facing it and look down and make sure the ski tips on each side are the same length then take a couple steps back and make sure each side looks square. also look inside the engine compartment and check the frame in front of the engine those frame mount tabs tend to break lots on hard impacts. 09s had pretty solid engines but i would also do a compression test to see where its at

If the ski tips don't happen to line up, don't worry about it. I dont know anyone who rides their XP and hasn't tweaked an s-module. If you ride early season, ride around trees, or just plain ride its bound to happen.

I would only worry if the shock spring is actually contacting an a-arm. A tweak of an 1/8 inch on the s module can be an inch of ski tip difference.

Some 09 came with the plastic belt adjuster. See if it was replaced. Plastic one was junk.

Look for signs of excessive belt wear. Look for pieces of blown belts and cords. Most 09 were good though.

Stock track? Look for rips and tears in the ports.

You could go as far as checking the crank run out. 2000km is still pretty low though. A compression check should be fine.

There was a recall for sticky dpm on the 09 as well. Anyone can do it. Just spray it with some WD40.

That's all I can think of right now.

To see if the skis are parallel front/back you can use a big drywall T-square just lay the long edge on the floor beside the track and sight across the rear edge of the skis

Compression I would be looking for 140 psi or better and make sure they are fairly close together in each cylinder!

On a quality compression tester you will be hard pressed to get that number on a 800R engine. Any where between 120-130 is tops and viewed as normal. All testers are not the same but this is what we have seen on our snap ons since 2007.

correct. 140 would be normal for sealevel.

Altitude Factor example 140x.097 =126.98

500 0.987
1500 0.960
2500 0.933
3500 0.907
4500 0.880
5500 0.853
6500 0.826
7500 0.800
8500 0.773

I would worry about a tweaked s module because its an aluminum frame component and only gets weaker with each blow. If the tips are out its reasonable grounds to cut some coin off the sleds price tag. Did you pick it up?

can you show me one that has had something fail because of weak components? Of the 4500mils on my 09 that has a tweaked s -module and the very first ride on my 2012 last year that a few thousand k on it that had a tweaked s module nothing has failed.

I believe if you give someone the impression that they need to find a XP with a perfectly aligned front end with ski tips that line up you are giving them a false sense of something that just simply isn't showing up. But I don't think you will find a used XP with a perfect s-module to begin with. It is a design that leads itself to being tweaked very easily.

There should be aa price deduction either way for a tweaked front end. You can still ride it but I wouldn't buy it that way at full pop.

Lets look at resale in general...

used 09 Summit 154 X.... 2000-3000 kms on it. Bone stock sled should grab $7000 Lets say a modded sled with all your normal upgrades, clutching, track replacement, some vent covers, skid plate. Probably going to fetch $7000-7500. Those prices are going to be on a good day. I don't care about the guys asking $8500-8800 for their 08/09 sleds. Just because that is what they are asking, doesn't mean it is what it is worth. Someone should be looking at a brand new 2013 Sport if they are going to pay that much for a used sled.

Whether it has a tweaked front end is not going to relate to a substantial discount.

Just like the guy who has an 09 Summit 154 X with 2000-3000kms but decided to put a fresh top end in. Does it make the sled more valuable? No. Lets go to the extreme...same sled but the guy put a new short block in it. Spent the $2000, how much of that $2000 is he going to get back?

Does an 09 with a new short block make it worth $9000? Hell no. Sled is still going to fetch $7500 on a good day. Is it going to sell faster than the guy with the original motor? Hopefully.

What does a tweaked front end equate to in price reduction? Depends on the severity of the "tweak" $50-100. If the springs are contacting the a-arms, probably stay away from it as i said.

Maybe thats the old salesman mentality in you coming out? If you are taking a sled in on trade you are going to reduce its value any way you possibly can so you can make the most profit on it. :) haha, kidding...a little.

Went and looked at the xp yesterday. The front end is noticably tweaked. The front right shock is about 1/2 inch from the rear of the A arm, front left is about 1/2 inch from the Front of the A arm.

What do you guys think? Pretty sure I can pick it up super cheap.

How difficult would it be to fix? Not sure I've heard of an s module before lol

All I can say to that is bring me an XP with a tweaked Nun and I'm docking you at least $300 for the part off Blue Book. If they don't like it then they can move on to the next dealer for there evaluation. We aren't in business to sell damaged goods.

If you are getting it at a great deal and want to fix it the s module will cost you around $300. If you do the labor yourself then no foul. If you gotta pay a dealer to do it expect at least3-4 hours labor on top of that. They are easy to replace just time consuming.

I never said anyone was in the business to sell something damaged. Although I have seen used/demo sleds sitting on dealership floors for sale with noticeable "tweaks" right in this very town.

All I am saying is, it appears some people are making a big deal out of a "tweak" when it is a used sled. Just because you can't see a noticeable difference in ski tip alignment doesn't mean the sled hasn't been tweaked. Be it the S- module, E module, an A-arm, shock mount, bent spindle or just about anything else, with a used XP it is common.

As Ken said, its just time consuming. Anyone with basic tools can usually replace it on their own. I don't bother replacing them. I just ride it. The spring would have to be touching the arm before I would replace it. Now could the E module (used to be called a nun on rev chassis) also have a tweak? Then you are into a larger project. Again, lots of guys just don't bother to replace it. The day after they replace it they whack something else.

I don't buy into the idea of adding braces to everything either if someone starts suggesting that. You start bracing something then something else has to give further down the line.

and I see you have already read this Ken, I wasn't trying to get under your skin and maybe the way I presented what I had to say came out that way but its just my point of view.
