Unexpected hazards.. I need some help

Hi peeps. I am doing an article on unexpected hazards when out sledding. Most are quite aware about Avalanche possibilities.. but what are some other hazards you can think of that are dangerous or even deadly?

Here are some that I can think of off hand.

Creekbeds, Angry Moose, Collapsing snow bridges... Treewells, Steep decents that are not sloped gradually causing you to lawndart into the snow

Sucker tracks, i.e. and old snowmobile track that leads to your doom. I've seen a couple over the years that I had wondered the outcome. Just because someone tried to go there doesn't mean that anyone should go there...

Well, from a non-mountain riding POV, any time you ride near rail road tracks, you take the chance of drilling old railroad junk near the right of way....ties, rails, cables, etc. The same could be said of mining roads I guess before the snow gets deep.

Treewells...yup, you got that...GAWD I have a story or two there....

Whiteout. You get into an area while vis is good....light snow, fog and flat light makes for a difficult ride out.

Stumps/rocks, jill pokes, open creek crossings. The good ol accidental cornice drop in flat light.

Spending too much time / money at the ballet!
Not actually believing your GPS
Thinking that you avypack will make you bulletproof
Have a buddy that tagged a tree. As he layed there cursing the bad luck, a piece of same tree from about 50' up had broken off and smoked him. Could'a speared him, as it was it hit him crosswise and only half killed him.

Might be silly, but im always nervous about tree branches pushing under my visor and catching my eye.

One you gotta watch out for around here is the piece of redi rod they use to mark the culvert alongside the forest service roads. If you are riding the banks those little puppies will scare the he!! outa you.

Cougars... both kinds lol

but on a more serious note, witches eyes, riding with inexperienced riders (can be lots of hazards there), riding in terrain a bit advanced for your skill and riding with possibly impaired people... one thing i wont do...

Baa ha haaa... Cougars! ..!!! I know spring riding had us in a HUGE Grizzly's territory man I wouldn't want to run into him. Does anyone have stories to accompany?

Spending the night on the mountain for a variety of reasons (injury, breakdowns, lost, cant climb backout,....etc) I would say more then 75% of the people riding are not equipped/prepared to spend a night on the hill side.

Moose, - buddy of mine hit one on his sled, coming off Renshaw, No damage.
Weather - Could change fast, waiting it out could lead to an over nighter.
Cliffs/Cornesses - Riding fast in unknowen areas, drops come up fast.
Rocks, stumps - Landmines when the snow condition is poor.
Creek beds, lakes, ice.
Other riders on the hill - you may know what your doing but others don't, others may not see you.
Hitting hills that are too steep.
Riding with others that don't look back.
Running low on fuel/Mechanical failures.
Riding the Crazy Carpet down little Bell. - Last year one in our group broke his Femmer in doing so.

Always go through your equipment when you ride. New batteries in the beacons, bump test the beacons.
Extra batteris for the GPS, keeps from getting lost.

Racing on the trails, Never know when you'll hit on coming sleds.


Snow blindness, sometimes can't tell a dip from a bump

Water bars, de-activation ditches, tank traps, concrete lock blocks.....all those man made hazards the Forest Service puts in to try to close a road.

And the groomer! You can sneak up on them awfully fast on a blind corner.

Deactivations on forestry roads...that's a biggie. Really sucks when you're smoking along and hit one of those unexpectedly....worse in the summer on a quad/dirtbike, but still not cool at all.....

overflow on lake ice = a foot of slush
shelf ice on creeks riding along and drop 2 feet when the ice breaks then your in 3 feet of water
narrow open creeks
