powderslut, I have a kuvaz and he as well loves the cold and will sleep in the middle of our property at - 20 while it's snowing or chewing on a deer or moose bone. Won't leave the property. Great watch dog, loves kids and the other animals around our property but knows who belongs to come on the property or not. Won't let most people out of there vehicles unless he knows them. I don't have kids but my animals so I treat them as my kids. BTW, I would not take him on sled trips anyways because he's to big and he loves it at home anyways. I take him on hunting and fishing trips where I leave him untied and am not around for the whole day and he will not bother anyone unless they come into my camp which is what I want. It comes down to common sense people. Just like not going riding in a spot where your gonna get buried.....

I work in the bush and spend most of every day driving in my pickup, I also have two Golden Retrievers that traveled the 100,000 km per year I was driving as well. If you looked in the back seat for about 6-10 hours a day they were sleeping or looking out the window. They get exercise a couple of times per day and are more than happy to spend the day in the truck while we are sledding, because this is how they spend most of their time. When we are camping and it’s time for bed, the dog’s head for the truck, it’s the place they feel safe and comfortable and do much better sleeping for the day in the truck, hopping to get a short ride up the hill on the snowmobile, or 15 minutes to chase the ravens from the parking lot than being left with some strange person in a strange place with strange dogs.....
Dogs always spark interesting debates about how a dog should be treated and what is fair, and oh you can’t do that…… I have had a debate with a person because my dogs ride in the box of the truck without being tied in….. well the day I tie my dog into the box is the 1 in 500 times that it decides to jump out because it is scared of thunder and now the same people who needed the dog tied into the box will want me hung because my dog strangled itself to death over the side of the box.
My dogs have a very good life; they are treated better than some people treat their kids. They are also very well trained, I bet I could leave my dog in box of my truck in a busy parking lot without being tied up and they will be there when I return, I know because I have done it.
My point is that people jump to all kinds of conclusions when they see things with dogs, rather than becoming irate with the owner because this is not how you would treat a dog, talk to them, see how the dog reacts to the situation that it is being put in by the owner. If the dog is calm relaxed and comfortable is it wrong?? Even if this is tied to a 3 ft lead??

That is very true, one of the biggest reasons I got out of rescue was because of the people I had to deal with on a daily basis.

It made me angry when I heard stories of people that had to give their dog away because of ignorant people/neighbors or just complainers, and then there were the bad owners...it was just non-stop dumbness.


Just a couple of things to watch out for... for dog owners/lovers

-people will run over/shoot your dog just because and say it was in the way or it attacked them ... if you can even find out who did it.
-people will try to pet your dog and if it bites someone it is still your fault especially if it has done it before (the dog could be classed as vicious and should not be left unattended/not muzzled fines are usually pretty hefty for these)
-people will steal your dog because they want it/black market/dog fighting/bait dogs/breeding/or just to "save" it (YES there is a lot of dog fighting in Alberta and BC)
-dogs tied up will be eaten/attacked by wolves/bears/stray pack dogs (this can happen at home on an acreage/farm or sledding)
-dogs tied up in the back of a truck is usually bad unless it cannot reach the side of the truck to jump out.
-dogs left untied in the back of a truck can still jump out/fall out if you have to break hard or swerve to miss something/someone on the road it could be thrown into oncoming traffic (i saw this, it is not cool)
-dogs left untied in the back of a truck could get bugs/rocks in the face. You have seen what a rock will do to a windshield, imagine what it will do to your dogs skull or eyeball. (an owner surrender dog died from this)
-don't feed your dog when you are at your truck, it will just upset the other dogs or it the smell will just bring predators.

-if you loose your dog or it is stolen, call all the vet clinics around, pounds, shelters and rescues and check Kijiji and Craigs list. Lots of stolen dogs end up there if at all. AND don't only check once or twice, check daily for months..AND report it stolen with the cops, so if it does show up somewhere they can charge the person and you have back up.
-make sure your dog has tags, microchip, tattoo. All three is best but a chip is the best. Tags can be removed by people and so can ears/skin (in the case of dog fighting) Regular people won't check for chips if they are stealing your dog and the dog fighting rings...well you won't find your dog so they are not worried about that.

-if anyone wants a dog let me know I still have contacts to lots of GOOD rescue groups cuz man there are a lot of NOT GOOD ones out there.
