Turbo M8 starting issues

Hey guys and gals,

Just finished rebuilding my m8 engine, put new pistons and rings in it etc. Just tried to pull it over for its first start up and it was verrry hard to pull over. could only get the cord out half way. Any suggestions where I should start looking for a solution ???

I would take your plugs out to see if it's easier to pull over. You check your ring gap and pin gap?

tough to give ideas, need more info. did you pull the motor, new jugs or the same ones? open the bottom end up? does it turn over by hand via the clutch?

Did it turn over easy after you put the jugs on (before putting the head on)? Did you make sure you got all the coolant out of the bottom end - it'll usually get a fair amount when you pull the jugs off. Like was mentioned, did you check ring end gap? Would have had to really push the get the jugs on if they were really tight but still....? Pull plugs and if still tight then better tear it down. :(

Isnt it a good idea to drain antifreeze before pulling cylinders off?

serious? you need rotating mass on the crank for it to pull over smoothly otherwise it gets hung up on each stroke. it will pull over without clutch on but it wont be fun.
The 1 guy said it wont pull over at all. The other guy said in order for it to pull over you need a clutch on it. I dont comprehend that.

He says he could only get the pull cord out half way. That tells me that it stopped dead correct me if im wrong.

lol ok whatever im not saying its the clutch forsure. but ive seen it be the issue MORE that once. including my own rebuilts where i had a memory lapse and forgot to put the clutch on because i was excited to check the compression. on my 2010 i could only get the cord out half then put the clutch on and bingo. some people use assembly lube when rebuilding. this can create excess compression due to the tight seal created by the excess oil. run it for a few minutes and the second pull over will be back to normal.

another thing to ensure is that you used the same thickness of base gasket.

and like mentioned above pull over the sled with plugs out just to make sure there is no binding.

You could be right, I don't have the clutch on. Got excited to pull it over. First thing I do when I get home in a couple days will be put the clutch on and give her another try... I'll let ya know

Got it fired up today. What a stupid mistake I made, I put the recoil cover on at the wrong angle so the cord was pulling at a stupid angle. I thought it would be something simple, but still had me worried !! Thanks for all of the suggestions
