How cheap?
Authorities in California have been known to go through state park campgrounds and do visual inspections on diesel pickups and RV’s. Any that fail a visual inspection for DPF’s, cats, etc are tagged, fined and must be towed to a repair facility and brought back to legal status before being allowed to drive on the roads in California.
Mess with the emission control and it is.
Yes it is. There is just no annual inspection in Alberta, and seeing the condition of some cars and trucks on the road, there should be.
I know a guy who got fined for pulling a trailer that was wider than 8 ft and his truck had no clearance lights.
So if you drive a deleted truck, you take a risk of getting fined everytime you leave the driveway, no matter where your destination is.
I haven't found anything more current, but here it is from 2013:
In Alberta, installing a DPF delete kit itself is not a regulatory offence, according to Alberta Transportation spokesperson and public affairs officer Trent Bancarz.

Alot has changed since 2013. Cant even get a glider anymore.
I have not found info on the emissions system being removed being actually illegal in Alberta like it is in other province. Increasing the sound of the exhaust is. Deleting the DPF increases the exhaust noise of the truck.

Who actually follows that, not alot.
Its against the motor vehicle act. As soon as you alter a vehicles emission control in every province it becomes illegal. Ticketable offense not hard time. Not even points here in BC but worth $95 when I got my last one in 05 with a threatening of being towed. One of those shut your mouth or this is going to get expensive for you kinda deals
In BC sure, if you can find in the Alberta Motor Vehicle Act where it is against the law then you are a better man than me, because I sure can't find it.
Federally it is an offense, thats what I did find, I could not anything about it being against the law in Alberta. Even for commercial trucks.
Than again i see lots of over length RV’s on the road towing B train and I have not heard is anybody has been fined for that.
What I did find is emissions regulations are federally mandated yet provincially enforced. Alberta chooses not to enforce, or acknowledge the law. I think the grey area is in the shops doing CVIPs, they are supposed to follow the federal code for inspections, meaning emissions intact, whether or not they can be hassled by the provincial authorities I'm not sure. I do know the deleted work trucks at the place I work pass CVIP without issue for emissions.
Interesting, I was messing around on you tube tonight and interesting enough, two vids popped up about the EPA banning all “off road” type truck modifications. Which the topic in the vid headlines was deletes.

The EPA has been on a witch hunt for sometime now, they shut down EDGE, H&S, ATP Truck just to name a few. They started with the tuner makers and have now moved on to the shops that sell the product and the shops actually doing the deletes.
To move on outside the world of diesels the EPA's reach is far reaching, I bought a husqvarna weed wacker this spring and it absolutely ran like crap. Was running far too lean up top to even run right. Went to adjust the carb and low and behold there is a special 21 spline key on the adjustment screws, so brought it back to the dealer to buy the tool and they can't sell it to me, against the law they said. In the end their small engine mechanic (who has the tool) tuned it up and got it running right, and I have found the tool on Amazon, but this is how far the EPA is going, worrying about the minuscule emissions caused by the liter of gas I will burn in my trimmer every year.
The cvip Bible for Canada when you go through the section on emissions controls has big bold lettering omit in Alberta. As of yet we don't have to do any kind of testing or verification if it's operable. That being said it is coming. Probably won't he for a few years and with the PC's back in office it might the a decade who knows. The guy who does my facility audits told me what they had been told by the higher up's is that if the NDP's had won it would have been changed over in their 4 year mandate as well as preliminary annual inspections on vehicles of 10 years old.Agreed that increasing the noise is against the law, but I also can't find anything on removing the emissions equipment itself being illegal. CVIP's for commercial vehicles are a different story, but I'm not sure what the current stance on that is right now, I do know there is a pile of semi's running around up here with the blue CVIP sticker on the door and coal rolling from the stacks.
