Just wondering how many people know that even though truck has full coverage,it only covers pl&pd on trailer. I found out the hard way when I went off an icy road and rolled the trailer with 1 sled in it. insurance did not cover any part of the trailer or the sled.

Not sure what our broker was doing, our trailers have always been insured separately, but it's through our homeowners policy.

Mine to,its under the home policy, OP needs a better broker IMO, they should of asked those questions when insuring truck and sleds. When I insured my truck for the first time they asked if I had trailers other than my holiday trailer that id be hauling with it and then they added them to my home policy. Also asked the same question again last year when I insured my new mtn cat, more so just to make sure I was current

If you think your homeowners insurance covers your trailer you better be getting this in writing from your broker. You can add the trailer to your policy and that is if its a holiday trailer not an enclosed or open snowmobile trailer. The tow vehicle insurance only covers the liability on the trailer in tow. Not good to wait till you roll your trailer with 4 sleds in it to tell your buds that they better have collision.

Pretty sure it does, they even issued a pink card when I asked for one on our 30' ATC multi-sport. A friend was borrowing it for a trip as his wasn't big enough for all the sleds they were taking and I wanted to make sure he didn't have any problems.

When I had my enclosed I had a separate policy for it for the value of it. That was about $450 per year for all perils, Fire, theft, vandalism, Collision. But that covered the trailer itself. The contents would be considered homeowners, less any motorized units. Those would require individual policy's. If you have a good broker/agent they will inform you properly on this, and if they can't I would shop around, Not always about the price.

Our overall annual insurance premiums are fairly hefty (lots of the usual sh*t to insure and then some), but our enclosed, deck and boat trailers are all shown separately on the homeowner's policy. The enclosed is around that $450/year and includes replacement cost as it was purchased new and has been continuously insured under the same policy.

When I had my enclosed it it showed separately on the home policy as well, was $340 a year, was only a 3 place and not super loaded or fancy, probably why it was a little less. I also have my open deck trailer on there currently and it shows separately, its much cheaper at just shy of $200 a year I think. I mostly have the extra policy on them as I worry about the trailer getting stolen and being out like $6000, but it covers an accident as well, as long as Im pulling the trailer or with it its covered. If its borrowed to someone and they get in a wreck Im $hit outta luck, so only borrow it to people who can afford to pay for damages or replace. Sleds of course are under vehicle coverage to save a bit but have separate policies just attached to truck and car

Putting the enclosed trailer under home policy is not an option. must be insured on its own full coverage to cover for rollover insurance. Our 5th wheel is covered under home ins. but only for the contents that get removed after returning from the holiday and if a tree falls on it while parked. ins co said trailer was covered for rollover under truck insurance. I asked for that in writing several times over two years, still nothing

Maybe thats how mine works as well. My broker told me Im covered in the event of a rollover with how my ins. is set up for my trailers, but my truck does have full coverage as well. Probably covered under trailer insurance for theft and damage from trees, wind etc. and covered from my full coverage on my truck

total my enclose past spring, they went through truck ins, and wrote it off. total pay out.

I confess to getting irritated with the insurance threads. I don't know where some get their advice but here is a snapshot from Alberta:

1. In Alberta, only the liability for the towing vehicle extends to the trailer. Period. Don't expect anything else cuz you will be disappointed.
2. If you want physical damage on your trailer, you might be able to get that through your homeowners policy but you better understand exactly what it is insured for because there are no rules pertaining to what is, or is not, covered.
3. Insuring your trailer under your auto policy can give you coverage you are likely to understand (All Perils, Collision. Comprehensive or Specified perils). Pick the combination that works for you.
4. Why would anyone expect the property carried on or in the trailer to be insured? It is not part of the trailer so how would anyone figure out what to insure unless you told them...in which case they (or a qualified broker) would deal with your sled, ATV, SXS or whatever specifically).
5. Fun fact. The Specified Perils section of the Alberta SPF 1 (which is the ONLY policy for automobiles sold in Alberta) covers collision damage to an insured vehicle when the vehicle it is carried on (truck or insured trailer) is in a collision or rolls over.

https://finance.alberta.ca/publicat...ates/SPF1-Standard-Automobile-Policy-2013.pdf

So I only insure my trailer for specified perils (liability is included under my truck) and my sled has liability ($5,000,000 cuz that is what I carry on all my stuff), Accident benefits are included when you buy liability and Specified perils. If I run the sled into a tree that is just part of the fun for me. If someone steals it or I write it off on the way to my destination because I rolled truck and trailer, at least I will get a truck and sled out of it. I am screwed on the trailer.
