Trail Repairs 2016

Day 2 of quading as I was checking many a cut-lines here and there, just happend to come across some Moose standing a-top a creek bank as I slowed to a stop to veiw them,,, we spent 4 or 5 minutes looking at one another, then it was time to part ways.

They meandered away causing the edges of the creek bank to give away, rocks and old dead fall'en timbers rolled down and filled in a dry land crossing.

Manitoba thoughts told me to "make" my way across the furry critter's dry land crossing "they" made.

Did I mention I'm on quad day 2 of a 4 day ride looking for dry-land creek crossing made by furry critters in the West lands.

So this trail repair topic has brought some well needed information to my mind.
Where does a person or group of people get informed or get updated as to when groups are doing trail repairs?

I would like to be more involved and help maintain and repair trails whether it is pre-planned months ahead of time or short notice.

Very good point.

Many OHV user groups , mostly sled groups are very well organized.

The OHV groups riding summer toys have a few groups and if you belong to the group they do have clean up days.

My though on this thread was that every ride we should be cleaning as we go.

See something pick it up. Trim a broken branch. Etc.

In May I am going for a week camping and riding. Each day if I see something I will just do it during the ride.

Planning a confirmed clean up day is a great idea also.

Best way to keep apprised of these things is to join a club - most clubs have a serious shortage of people willing to volunteer. Once in a while someone will post something on here.

Did you happen to have video of the damage caused by the said moose, if so would you please send it in to SRD ASAP.....

If anyone needs a hand cleaning up trails pm me, work is slow and wouldn't mind helping out with anything. I have a quad, saw and somewhat strong back.

There are groups form Southern Alberta to GP that do good work along the Eastern Slopes, I'll jump on the band wagon at the closest one to my door for srpring clean up ride to the West area.

Yes that a few that will not see things our way in the West-lands, right-fully so. But the little effort we do pitching-in to support a group improves a small fraction of like minded folks that like and want to take part in "wiser ohv use" Province wide,,, many users that free lance on their own have best practices at hart to.

Once the pictures are posted its a thread we can spare with others to show the "Reality" of what is going on in Alberta and S&M.

This threa might not ever change other folkes ideas of what they" think of ohv, but it would be hard to say they didn't see it when someone pointed this thread out.

The Show me is here, having proof to share with folks in Alberta, Canada, and other places might work.

Nothing wrong with trying as its could be an option of getting the meassage out there.

Went out to Opal today. I WISH I would have had a SxS to put trash in. There's enough car parts in there to build a new car. Shot gun shells galore. Quad parts. Bike parts. You name it. What a complete chit hole. I won't be even the slightest bit surprised if this area gets shut down. Very very sad how some people are.

Spend quite a bit of time clearing downed trees when I come across them in the main area I ride. There's a great little spot to relax by a creek that I've cleaned up a few times the past couple years only to find it a mess the next time I came back. Found some kids there once and politely asked that they clean up when they were done and they were good about it. Another time I came across two older women who were drinking and got belligerent really fast and ended up leaving all their mess, including lawn chairs so I think I'm fighting an uphill battle.

If that's the area I'm thinking of with all the gravel pits... yes, what a total frigg'n mess. I've talked with a couple of the gravel pit owners and they are completely fed up, not just with ATV'ers but possibly even more by campers and shooters leaving shot and shells in their finished agregate piles, shooting the windows out of their equipment, etc. I went there a few weeks ago only to find that just about anywhere I've staged in the past is now blocked off. I actually wente there with the intet to maybe drag a couch or two out of the bush but had trouble finding a decent staging spot, so I turned around and went somewhere else.

I've talked with a couple of the gravel pit owners and they are completely fed up, not just with ATV'ers but possibly even more by campers and shooters leaving shot and shells in their finished agregate piles, shooting the windows out of their equipment, etc. I went there a few weeks ago only to find that just about anywhere I've staged in the past is now blocked off. I think I might have been a different area. We originally went to the gravel pits, but found out also, that it was all blocked off. So, we came back south again and headed east a few miles to this "Opal". LOTS of sand. Some skeg. Some trails. But garbage EVERYWHERE. not surprising tho. We came across a three some of trucks. One buried up to the axles in the skeg. Not sure how they were getting outta that one.

I started off the season cleaning up around my pals abandon tree stands since time has taken a toll. The day will come when they need full removal.

Side-walls on this one.


And my other pa,l who no longer hunts will need tearing out on 2016/17 year.
Plan is to haul out the big stuff and bon-fire smoky dog cook the left overs.


This is where some folks got rid of their truck camper 2 years ago, the next year it rolled into the lake, so I contacted Fish & Wild Life since it was in Provincial Park land to have it removed.


My long time pal and I kept trails open starting in February, plan is to do it all year long now that I have quad tracks to cover most of the areas West of Lacombe and beyond.


We even took on the big ones.


This is a fail on the part of "No Brains" if nothing happens with in in the next 2 years, it will become fire wood so forestry does not kick us out of this area.
Big dreams that became a mess for the rest of us. Pipe dream. 2 years will tell if they return to finish's it, or left behind un-touched.

This site gets used every year, and its a good hang-out if raining, we'll will fix the rain tarp for others to use.


This is one of the cleanest camp spots I've ever found, so Koo's too the hunters that really put things together on this one.

I stage at 20 ish camp spots out West, gives me time to clean up the tree limbs, pick-up left overs, and stack rocks around fire pits. More of a good deed that many OHV folk do, the Arff thread is a small snap shot of this that has gone on for many years. Glad S&M has a host site to show awesome work we do at promoting our sport for years to come.


We like the easy trails, so best time spent is finding loop-arounds that do not lead to low lands,,, our small quads don't do well in those areas.


We'd rather spend a few hours per-week to gett'er-done, the ending is a good trail high and dry by using old cut & slash lines that are all ready there.


Pick a line that is easy to work on


I'm a 1/3 of the way up this nasty run. Ha.


2 hours at a time over 3 to 4 more days will give all of us a over the top of the mountain crossing.


Old time iron remains for wondering minds on how it got there.


Who would of been back there 60 years ago.


Each of us take on what we can handle, then post a write-up with photos. Send me a PM if your not sure how to load pics as I can do it at my end for all to see.

We almost always meet on weekends. I see you joined the club recently, so you will automatically be notified of general meetings, events, rides, work bees, etc.
