Will it ever end. I rode 120km of trail in an out of renshaw last thur an fri, payed 40.00 total and loved trail. Some poeple comp[lain that it was to rough, i found that it was 7.5 out of ten, not 1 out of ten like in 80's an 90's. I started riding in 1990 when you spent
a day putting paddles on,
jetting, and clutching. Then riding trails that had bigger mountian then actually on mountian. I did this because i loved it. Now today some
will complain if the trail is not smooth as table top. With the out of box sleds today and riding gear there is not a bad trail anymore.
Now at renshaw they have to go 60km there and back, at allen it is 18km there an back. So cost factor is really different to do same job.
Now this happens at every hill. Cost are different. Some hills get more sledder than other that is how they determine how many times
they can groom in a week

so you trailer complainers, move to ontario where you can ride groom trailer all day and leave mountian riding to those who will ride any type
of trail just to get to the sweet and deep snow.

I'm sure the warmer temps had something to do with it deteriorating so quickly.

Included with your trail pass you also received a club membership so you can voice your concerns to the club on how to make things better.

So complaining about the complainers? 120 kms of groomed in 2 days is almost as much as the boys out east anyway, so I'm not sure who you are talking to.

Here we go once again............:sleepmsn:

I groomed Friday night and it rained to 6000'+. I didn't doo the last 10 km through the bush as it would have been a waste of fuel. I was grooming a slushie and the trail would not have been good/ideal on Saturday morning. Mother Nature can be brutal for us groomer operator's. Yes, we charged for the trail pass. Fuel and maintenance doesn't come cheap (we, the FSA, have spent thousands on repairs this year) and $10/person is a long time in getting the costs paid for.

I groomed the same trail last night (Monday) after all the rain and the traffic. It was brutal to say the least! I had to double groom just to get it respectable. On the initial pass, the blade wouldn't even cut the moguls it was soooo frozen. It was a start to get it back into shape again.

For those who have all the answers, come and jump into the shotgun seat for 8-10 hours and see how it works. My head hit the pillow at 2:30 am this morning.

Some will appreciate the efforts. Most will whine...........funny thing, eh!

do u guys have a real tiller on the back ? or just some packer type thing ?

Willy, tillers are for ski hills! They don't work on snowmobile trails. Get informed before going for the gusto......

Basically, the tiller goes up and down either with the motion of the SnowCat or the contour of the mogul. The Mogul Master is the only way to consistently groom a snowmobile trail. The blade has to cut the moguls and roll the snow to get it flowing and then it goes through the blades/cutters on the mogul master and the snow is "conditioned or heated by friction" and force under the pan on the back of the mogul master. The longer the mogul master the smoother the trail.

anyone who complains about grooming should just buy their own groomer, groom the trails every day for everyone at night and then in the day sit ont he side of the trail trying to collect $20.00 per person! See how quick you go bankrupt. Life is full of bitchers, stay away from them and get out and live!

Awesome explanation FS, thanks for doing all you do for Fernie. I think the explanation is lost on Willy though. He wouldn't know why a groomed trail is important because he doesn't belong to a sled club. He doesn't believe in contributing anything to the sport of sledding other than his ridiculous posts.

Isn't that the truth! Nothing to contribute but :smiliestirthepot:

Willy is one of those guys "who knows best" as he sits in front of the big screen with his lips flapping and his finger tapping. He can't see the big picture from his back yard and maybe the haze is too thick to understand the economic and environmental benefits of belonging.

Imagine if your favorite area decided to discontinue grooming due to costs....I can't, I've ridden plenty of ungroomed trails and don't want to go back to that.
A beat up trail is still better than an ungroomed ride.
My hat goes off to all Groomer Operators and the effort they put in.

Weather and broken groomer makes trail bad real quick!! But I still go. And ride bumpy trails. Cause it's wayyyyy better than working!! The people bitching all the time are same ones that call bylaw on dogs barking rather than looking outside to see if barking at something or someone... Or god forbid someone leaves a trailer unhooked on street... Some people get off on that chit. If they don't like it they should volunteer!!!!

yes I understand the weather is the reason that the groomer has such a big problem with keeping the trail in good condition but can u tell me why the groomer can't start going up the hill earlier in the day. If it takes 8 hrs to go up and down why don't u start up at 3 oclock and knock the trail down some so it's not as bad for when u come down at the end of the day and when the groomer starts to come down the sledders should be gone. Yes i'm sure it's a liability issue when u go up the trail but once the sledders no the scedule they would no the groomer is coming up.

Well here we go again. If we groom 16' wide (twice as wide as the mogul master) there is twice as much trail for the sleds to use. Following me so far?

So we go up and we come down and try to make it as wide as possible. The problem with your scenario is that when the sleds come down they do not give the ribbon (the snow coming out of the back of the mogul master) a chance to freeze or set-up. If there are parts of moguls remaining (and there almost always is) the soft snow inbetween is soft and just gets pounded right away. We try to leave when there is a minimal amount of sleds coming down. As soon as a sled passes the groomer, 98% of the time they are on the fresh ribbon and that generally destroys a nice baby butt smooth trail for the morning.

We would go even later in the day but there are some people who have to go to real work the next morning. Doo you want to volunteer for a few of your precious days off? I could arrange for an empty jump seat for you.

The old days of going into Chatter Creek with no grooming, no thanks.
I'm more then happy to pay the 20 or so dollars even if it was groomed two days ago and had 200 sleds over it.
Groomer operators keep up the good work!!!!!!
