Towing with Toyota Tacoma??

Hey all,

Ok i'm sure this thread has been started at some point but couldn't find so here we go...

Just curious who or who knows of someone towing a trailer with a Tacoma, how it is, what sizes, etc. and any downsides...

Right now my Dad has offered us an amazing deal on his 2008 Pioneer 22ft trailer and it's dry weight is somewhere around 4000lbs. But, we're still looking at trailers that are even lighter.

any input is greatly appreciated!

My 23' was about 4600lbs... I find a lot has to do with the axle placement on the trailer... my tongue weight was huge because my axles were set back further and my 1/2 ton squatted hard... ended up buying a 1 ton just to haul it comfortably....

it's all gonna depend on the rating of the truck and what is legal if you are leaving alberta.... within alberta a tacoma is usually good for an 8000lb 5th wheel and a 21' boat.....

A 4000# trailer should be no issue, and you will actually even be able to stop it...As Bogger says, axle placement and hitch weight will determine if a Tacoma can pull it. A 2000# trailer is too much if the hitch weight is wrong...Best way is to put your hitch on a scale...

The key word here is TACOMA,... not TUNDRA, also depending on what year, and options MAX in most cases is prolly about 5500lbs give or take.

Try here and see if you can find some specs,.. irregardless,.. I hate to say it but 4000lbs, with not including truck occupants, OR food, clothes, camping stuff in the trailer, you are going to be pushing the limits of that little truck.

I have the exact same trailer but an 07 and I tow it with my 08 silverado 1500.I pretty much can't tell its back there except when accellerating.I find its alot better to have too much truck than too much trailer.Taco is going to be right on the edge and when you hit wind gusts and other hazards you'll wish for more truck

I can't agree with that statement more !!!!
Over the years I've slowly got bigger and bigger trucks to haul my trailers. When you have too small of a truck, it's hard to tow to the mountains or places with lots of hills. You have to watch how much stuff you pack with you too. It all adds up to WEIGHT !! The other factor you have to consider to is stopping,it's pretty hard to panic stop (if you have to) with a small truck and a big trailer. As well, it's hard on the truck to hauling a big trailer. Hard on the cooling system, transmission, brakes, etc.

Soon to be mandated...all RV's (non commercial vehicles) will have to follow all the same rules as commercial vehicles and pull into the scales as commercial vehicles do. Will have to follow all the same rules and regulations including safety and weight parameters...

that will make the roads a lot safer

get some of the "dangerous rigs" off the road. I'm not saying everyone is hauling more then they are supposed to, i know i've pushed the limits of my truck when i haul the boat but i've seen some pretty crazy setups here in Alberta

Never going to happen and you would be the first on bitching if it did because the line up at the scales would be a mile long.

this will never happen. i am in the trade and i hear these crazy rumors every year. unfortunately some guys have to wreck it for the rest of us but stopping at the scales will never fly. it would never work, every 3rd vehicle on the hi-way would have to be scaled on any given summer weekend. same as the double trailer combo rumors....been hearing that one for many years

we had an 05 tacoma and hauled an old steel 2 place horse trailer with two arabs in it many times with no probs,,, that said it did the job but you could tell that it was labouring at times on hills
sooo you shouldnt have any issues just dont be dissappointed when ur gas mileage is sh!tty and ur not getting the performance of a duramax or cummins

Or when you are driving at night and your headlights are pointed at the sky,and omg if you hit a crosswind STOP. I see you have dirtbikes, if you put them in the truck with all your gear you are going to be so overloaded it is insane.1000lbs bikes and acc.,600lbs people and acc.,500lb tongue weight (loaded trailer)2000lbs = 1 ton I am pretty sure your tacoma is not rated to carry a ton. My 2010 f-150 with the trailer package only has a payload of 1870lbs.You want to be in a comfortable weight range for your truck,it will make you feel safe going down the road with your wife and kids. Will it pull it ,probably.............Do you want to bet your families life on it to see if it will???? Do the math, it is in your owners manual.

Could a Tacoma haul a trailer that big? I borrowed my brothers truck for Vale this past weekend (cause mine doesn't have a brake controller yet) to haul my friends 19' enclosed trailer and it's a Chevy Silverado 1500 HD with the bigger engine and THAT thing struggled.

My Tacoma's towing capacity is rated for 6500lbs, it comes stock with a towing package so this thing is meant to haul i'm just curious as to how people have found it with towing. Keep in mind we are only 2 people, no kids, and travel pretty light. Most of the trailers we've been looking at max out at around 5500lbs, which is still 1000 lbs under my trucks limit. I see Tacoma's pulling fairly big trailers all the time, and in a lot of trailer ads I see " Hauled with Toyota Tacoma.." so i'm really just curious as to the experiences people have had with them.

trailer@5500lbs what about water food and all your other stuff. Pretty easy to carry 1500lbs worth of stuff. Any time you are at or near your towing capacity you are going to have a shitty time towing. It is more about payload than towing capacity, if you have no suspension left because of the weight

Whatever trailer you look at buying, make sure you hook it up and give it a tow with lots of turns, hills, and slam-on-the-brake stops. My Tacoma was rated the same but there is no way I would have tried to pull 6000lbs anywhere but on flat Alberta paved roads.

With some smooth driving I'm sure you could get a big trailer through the mountains, the day you'll have a problem is when it is +2 degrees, snowing hard, and someone crashes in front of you while you are coming down a hill of ice. The Tacoma can pull it, but not necessarily stop it. My 2-spot sled trailer pushed me through a corner and off the road while coming down an icy logging road on a misty day out by Nelson. Pretty intense.

A mechanic I met at Heninger in Calgary towed a 24 foot camper with his but only headed east to camp and had put some airbags in his truck.
