Tow Vehicle

I need some help we bought this trailer last weekend and my truck is too small
Trailer is 34 feet long dry tongue weight 550lbs and 5540 dry weight
I found a experienced Dodge 1500 4X4 5.7 Hemi it is priced right, I don't need anything till spring
Not sure if I should bite the bullet and buy this or wait till next year
I am not going to make any money I leave the money in the bank
My questions are will this Dodge pick up pull this trailer properly and is the Dodge pick up a good truck
We had a Dodge caravan years ago, very happy with the Toyota products

Gotta say I don't know why they let you leave the lot pulling that with a taco. Even a Dodge half ton is going to be working and sucking back the gas. Do your self and everyone else on the road a favour and get at minimum a 3/4 ton. Get a diesel if you can.

Yup you're beyond a half ton with that trailer and with a quad or two on the front she'll be begging for mercy.
And I agree, the dealer that let you pull out of the yard with that hooked on to a Taco should be biotch slapped.

You wouldn't even be close to being safe or legal pulling that unit with a 1500 pickup of any brand. Scares the crap out of me when I see big loads being towed with light trucks.

I agree. Buy a bigger truck. It is so much stress towing with a small truck vs a big one. With a one ton I would hardly feel that trailer behind me. With my 1/2 ton it will tow it but it gets kicked around more. And diesel makes it easier too.

With a dry weight of 5540 I figure any 7700 or 8200 GVW pickup should be fine. It's not like it's a monster, most 18' travel trailers have a dry weight pushing 5000lbs (I know I looked all summer) and are pulled by 1/2 tons everywhere. My little 18' weighs around 4000 loaded and we use a V6 4runner to tow....no issues at all.

The only reason his Toyota has issues is the tongue weight.... I believe the 2014 4.0L Tacoma's have a 6500 lb tow capacity.

Would I put air bags in the Tacoma and tow that around???? No .......but I don't think a 3/4 ton diesel is required to tow a 5400lb trailer

My 2003 Silverado 1500HD crew 4x4 will tow that thing all day long...

But that setup is gonna have alota tongue weight when loaded up wit quads etc. A 3/4 wit bags or overloads wouldnt hurt

Agreed that the tongue weight could be high on that unit, but if his tongue weight is rated at 550lbs then that should be indicating what the Max tongue weight is. 3/4 is probably not a bad idea but the outrage at "even the thought of using a 1/2 ton to tow that" is uncalled for....

Good late model half ton will tow that fine but an HD will be more comfortable if you have two quads on the tongue. Half ton is nicer to drive the other 90% of the time you aren't towing.

exactly what I was going to say. I know a guy who pulls a similar trailer with a tundra and the weight distributing hitch makes all the difference.

Loaded with toys in the front it will be lots of tongue weight. A weight distribution hitch is a must. And a good brake controller

I would opt for a 3/4 ton or 1500 HD like bogger has for sale. They pull decent.

And 550lbs tongue weight?? Is that empty? Seems a lot to me cause the actual trailer is far back ? Guess it has a fuel station up front to ?
